This Cardas cable features a full-size 1/4" plug termination. "Special-order" terminations of your choice are also available by calling HeadRoom. However, please keep in mind 'special-orders' are NOT eligible for HeadRoom return or exchange. FYI: To quickly replace the headphone cables of your HD580, HD600, or HD650, simply pull the stock cable connectors straight out from the earcups with a firm tug and then insert the replacement cable with the Cardas nautilus shell logo facing towards the outside of the earcups. DO NOT TWIST THE CORD DURING REMOVAL! Unlike other replacement cables, Cardas custom-molds the connectors and uses a four-conductor cable to dramatically reduce the number of solder joints. Cardas replacement cables are also available in 10' and 20' lengths. Also available are XLR/balanced headphone cable sets for our HeadRoom Balanced Desktop, Balanced Home, & Balanced Max amps and also a short-run 4ft Cardas cable terminated to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug for portable-use applications.

What's in a cable?
Posted by podzilla from Caldwell, NJ on 2010-11-21

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Painless upgrade, longer length, dramatic sound improvment
Cons: Pricey, packaging could be nicer

What's in a cable? Apparently, more than I thought. Much more, as it turns out with the Cardas Headphone cable upgrade for my Sennheiser HD-600's. I recently invested in a new Pro-Ject Debut III turntable to reproduce my burgeoning vinyl collection and am slowly upgrading my other components around it. I have owned the 600's for awhile, formerly using them stock with my old turntable/amp setup with mediocre results. I ordered the Cardas with mixed expectations; could it really justify its extremely high price? What cable could possibly be worth 20 dollars a foot? I received my answer when it arrived in the mail a few days later. I swapped it out in seconds (the key to remember is "red is right" when changing the stock cable out) and set my brand new German import copy of Pink Floyd's "Animals" on the turntable. Before I was even able to sit down on my couch, I was struck with the opening chords of "Pigs on the Wing". There was a volume, expansiveness and depth to the sound that hadn't been there before. It sounded more lifelike; the vocals had a timbre and pitch that had been masked by the 600's overly technical response. This cable doesn't so much as improve the mids, lows and highs; it feels like it re-arranges the mix so the elements stand out. The technical reproduction and "veil" of the 600's is completely gone. Recordings shine with a 3D soundstage that honestly had me looking behind me when instruments would start playing. The barking dogs at the end of "Dogs" sounded like they were coming from outside the window in my den, not through the headphones over my ears. I didn't even notice that when the side ended I hadn't moved and was still standing in front of the stereo; all I wanted was more of this. For comparison's sake, I swapped the old cable back in and re-played the side. It sounded flat and lifeless. Everyone else who I have done this for has said the same thing. There is a massive improvement with this cable; it turns already superb headphones into a world class listening experience. Pair them with a good turntable and some clean vinyl and you have your own little audio utopia right between your ears.
