Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: soft, wide, better bass but without muddy treble
Cons: relatively expensive
The circular pattern is attractive but quietly productive. It's more attractive than the ovals of the Sennheiser line but the pads are not completely symmetrical. The backs are wider than the fronts, angling the driver to better fit the orientation of the earlobes, which are closer to 45 degrees than flush with the skull. This is critical for getting the best of both worlds: better bass without sacrificing sound stage and clarity. In essence, AKG is providing the wearer with a pad that allows its drivers to be both nearer to, and further from, the ear canal, with the front close for bass and the back further away for sound stage and treble response.
The disc design is the right way to go. Comparing these to the Grado "bowls" (the L-Cush pads), I noticed that these cushions are no further from the ear but the wider aperture allows for better high-frequency dispersion. Translation: the drivers never get so far from the ear as to kill the bass, but the pads don't press in on the drivers, killing treble. Grado's G-Cush salad bowls attempt to do the same thing but widen ear/driver distance without matching the angle of the earlobes.
In modding my Grados to get the best sound, I ended up building the same product, though without the velour. I am impressed to find at least one headphone manufacturer hitting all the right notes: (1) close driver/ear distance; (2) wide aperture for better HF dispersion; and (3) angled orientation to match the natural angle of the ears. AKG has it right. It's only a matter of time before the rest of the headphone world recognizes this. At $45 for the pair, you pay a premium but these pads are worth it.
