Applications:
A proper near-field system for computer reference listening MUST elevate the speakers off the desktop to prevent the image and tone destroying comb-filter effects from 'first reflections' coming off the desk surface. This problem is solved both practically and elegantly with the Focal XS 2.1 Multi-Media Sound System that uses satellite speakers with integrated stands that elevate the speakers about 11" above the desktop. This permits a proper audio image to develop and produces audio uncolored by first reflection bounce. It's really a fabulously sweet near-field listening system that works seamlessly with music from your computer and iPod or iPhone. The complete XS 2.1 system includes two satellite speakers with integrated stands (one of which will dock and charge your iPod/iPhone and has volume & power controls), along with a sleek sub-woofer cabinet housing the down-firing speaker and internal amplifiers for the entire system. Very cool and easy to use system earns our highest HeadRoom recommendation!
The Focal XS 2.1 has three inputs from which to play your tunes: you can dock your iPod or iPhone into the right speaker stand which will both play music and charge your device; you can connect your computer to the XS 2.1 via USB which will allow you to both play music and sync your iPod; or you can simply plug any audio source into the 1/8" mini-jack 'aux in' on the rear of the right stand. The system also includes a sub-woofer which houses both the down-firing sub speakers, the three power amplifiers for the satellites and sub, and the control electronics. The crossover point is at 150Hz, which is low enough to prevent aural localization of the low frequencies away from the primary image. The satellites are two way with a 3' mid and 3/4" tweeter, the sub-woofer is a 6" driver; the power amp has a 70 Watt channel for the sub and two 30 Watt channels for each satellite.
As a cool plus, the Focal remote control unit handily attaches magnetically to the speaker tower stands, so more searching all day for the dang remote!
