British HARBETH's recent re-engineering of their flagship mini monitor P3ES2 speakers into a new P3-version 'radial driver' design has resulted in probably the best small bookshelf speaker system we've heard. The HARBETH P3ESR speakers feature the exclusive 'RADIAL2' cone (developed by Alan Shaw) which has a high-gloss bonded finish that allows much more sonic information to flow through the cone, especially in the critical mid/presence frequencies. This new variant of the P3 family's well-proven 19mm tweeter offers the kind of liquid clarity and pristine detail resolution found in speakers at literally 10X the price AND at much bigger dimensions. Their soundstage imaging ability is open and expansively deep, an impressive achievement given their 'near-field' cabinet size. To our ears, HARBETH P3ESR speakers represent the very ultimate in small drive unit technology; we feel it may be the new reference standard in the fast-growing audiophile mini monitor category. These HARBETHS are simply a joy to hear and -- as a nice plus -- they have a lovely audio synergy with our high-definition stereo or monoblock HeadRoom Speaker Power Amps. The Harbeth speakers are 100% manufactured exclusively in Britain.
The new 'RADIAL2'-equipped 110mm [5" inch] bass/midrange driver (a first for Harbeth!) offers the hallmark clarity and simple naturalness of the larger HARBETHS but in their smaller venerable LS3/5A cabinet design. Of course, the famously rich, authoritative and perfectly balanced HARBETH bass response remains intact, so these little P3ESR speakers are capable of delivering a more accurate, authoritative and impactful bass presence versus any other speakers of their size we've ever heard at HeadRoom; its tight, exacting, yet fully textural bottom-end presentation is easily comparable to far larger cabinet structures. All HARBETH woofers and drivers are precision-made to exacting standards right in the Harbeth factory and are individually numbered and completely traceableable for lifetime repair right down to the glue types used to make them.
The HARBETH P3ESR Speakers offer discrete gold-plated binding posts on each speaker employed in a conventional stereo mode. The rosewood speaker cabinets are made of real wood -- not a cheesy laminate simulacrum -- which accounts for their distinctive look and likely contributes something to their unique tonality as well. The bass/mid driver is fully magnetically shielded which allows for operation adjacent to conventional or TFT monitor screens. The speakers measure 305mm X 188mm X 198mm -- so true bookshelf size indeed. The Harbeths are classic-looking, great-sounding speakers and provide a great option versus the equally superb (but completely different sounding) Amphion speakers we're also making available for our top master-level HeadRoom Audiophile Desktop System. Employs standard stereo gold connection posts; No bi-amping features or bi-ampable connectivity.
