Headphone.com gets a makeover

Welcome to our new website!

We have been working overtime to get our new website ready for prime time. However, we still have plenty of tweaking to do now that it is live. Really, this is just the beginning as we see it. While the biggest change you will see is a new design, we are most excited about what you don't see. Behind all the beautiful photos of headphones is a flexible and well integrated website platform. What this means for you is that we get to spend less time coding widgets and more time finding and evaluating great headphones.

The ideas we have on how to improve headphone.com are overwhelming. This is where we need your help. We would rather bring in products that you want or build tools that would help you find the best headphones for your lifestyle rather than just working on our wants. So with that in mind we'd like to ask you:

What can we do better?

What new products would you like to see at headphone.com?

Or more simply, what do you like or dislike about the new website?

Feel free to post in the comments here or email jamey@headphone.com if you'd like to keep it private.

I have the same feedback as Bryan Fox. As someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about audio equipment, I used to come to this site to get a nice rundown of different headphones and things to consider when buying. While the top ten picks are still here and useful, I feel like there was more in-depth information on the old site. You used to have richer narratives about each of your categories that integrated comparisons of various products. Those are what brought me back to this site. I feel like the site has sacrificed this rich information for style. Now it’s just an online headphone store.

Having said that, I just noticed that in the News sections there are some pretty in-depth articles, so maybe some of the information I was expecting is in there but hard to find. In that case maybe it’s a matter of surfacing articles in a more convenient and clear way.

Duke: Glad you found the frequency response graphs. We've been getting feedback from others about this and we're looking into a good way to display them on the page or at least provide a link. We have made a couple small font adjustments that hopefully help some of what you've addressed. @Bryan Fox: Thanks for all your great feedback. We're sorry you don't like the new site, although you may find that after a bit of time of surfing around and also after we get through some more updates that things aren't quite so different. The customer reviews are all there, you'll see them at the bottom of every product page. Thank you for taking the time to write reviews, we also think the customer reviews have a lot of invaluable information and we worked hard to maintain those. HeadRoom's star ratings, however, were unfortunately more difficult to integrate. Many of our collections, such as travel headphones for example, http://www.headphone.com/collections/travel-headphones, only show our top recommendations. We're still working through how we can show our favorites on a specific headphone category, and your feedback helps us to understand what is important to many of our customers. We're also working on navigation; we're curious what you think may make it better? Is it visually difficult? Do we need more filters? Finally, regarding Headphone Samurai, he is on hold for a while as our videographer has taken another position in a different state. Once again thanks a lot for your feedback. @ Infothirst: We are currently working through dead links and putting in as many redirects as we can. For example the page your referenced now goes to our main "headphones and DACs" landing page. We do not have a top recommended DACs page because we've found it really depends on your application, listening preferences, and budget. The best thing to do is to email our sales department at salesheadphone.com for some recommendations, they would be happy to help you out. Thanks a lot for your feedback.
@ Ryan: Thanks for your positive comments! We wish there was an easier and more affordable way to get goods to Canada. Unfortunately most manufacturers do not allow international shipments, and this seems to be happening more and more. As for the videos showing up on product ages, you will see this diminish over time as we’re working through the issue and moving them to their own tab.
Again, thanks for the great feedback. :-)

I missed the graphs about frequency response, until I finally found them under the Research menu, “Build A Graph”. The contrast of the font seems low – being gray rather than black. Also the font seems vertically elongated. Those two factors seem to make the main text font less readable than on most web sites.

As a trusted source I have been using your website for over 10 years and honestly I am not the biggest fan of the new website. The main reason I found and quickly became my go to website were your headphone reviews, star ratings and recommendations. Most of which are completely gone now. I think it’s better looking but flashy and loses the whole point of the original websites origin. Most importantly: the reviews! #1 the headroom star ratings are completely gone. As are the endless customer reviews including several I wrote personally and no offense spent a lot of time on. #2 it’s very clustered and unorganized and not as easy to navigate. You at one time were my go-to website, unfortunately I feel like you guys are like that great old band that sold out for new fans. Don’t you want to.keep the old one’s? Deleting their reviews is cerrainly not the way. While I’m all for expanding you need to expand not completely change. No offense but nobody was complaining before, “if it aint broke, don’t fix it!” Unfortunately this old school fan is probably going back to the research board to find another website. I hope this doesn’t sound like ranting I just hope this “band” takes the old school fan base’s feedback and comes back with the ultimate “come back album.”

P.S. no more headphone samurai?

With this “makeover” there seem to be a lot of dead links.
I was in particular searching for the top amps and dacs selection guide: www.headphone.com/selection-guide/top-headroom-amps-and-dacs.php
Could you please provide me the correct link. And if you have a better guide on what are the top DACs similar to your best audiophile headphones page, could you provide that too.

Hey guys,

Great new website, nice layout!

Some pages that have videos with the images have the video stuck in the image spot permanently. It blocks the images from being seen because the video box wont go away! Other than that, I’d like a ‘see all’ option or a ‘view as list option’. The tiles format is nice, but scrolling up and down everything sorted by price is nice to do.

I would suggest products for the Headroom, but even if they were there, I am unfortunately unlikely to buy them because I live in Canada. Getting nailed for duty when ordering from the States sucks! Wish more was available in Canada. Nevertheless, this website and Head-Fi.org are my go to places for headphone awesome, knowledge, and fun. I’m there every day.

Keep up the great work!

Nice new design, although the drop-down menu for “headphones” is very glitchy on Android (4.3 and 4.4). I’ve tried it on 4 different browsers, and there’s no way to get it to:

- stay open

- see the entire drop-down menu in landscape mode

Works fine on my laptop, of course, but I have a hunch that many people are going to be looking at this site using mobile devices, and that’s problematic at the moment.

Otherwise… while I like the new look (clean, lots of white space), I think the organization under the different headphone categories might work better if the display was automatically sorted by price, as with the old site. It would also be nice to have a bit of your copy for each item (as before). I think that’s very helpful for customers and that just showing the photo is a bit daunting for folks who are new to the game, and to your site. The copy was friendly-looking and -sounding, imo, and gave the impression that someone from your store was actually “talking” about the various products.

( I know, it’s probably not your goal to restore all of those features, but I think it really helps for people to be able to see it – speaking as a former retail worker, in book and music stores.)

Best to all of you!

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the feedback. We used to be on an custom php based platform. The new site is running on Shopify. We are very happy with it. Our old system started to get in the way. Now we are more focused on great gear and less on code.

The new site looks great! As an IT professional evaluating web commerce platforms, I’d love to hear a couple details about the platform. Did you go with a SaaS offering? Open Source? or did you write it yourself? Are you happy with it?
