Grado SR 325i
The SR325i are at the top of the Grado Prestige Series line. They have a rather forward, bright-sounding presentation with tremendously good highs/mids and a punchy, solid bass response that is nicely improved over the original SR 325 model. The highs are certainly VERY finely detailed which some critical listeners might perhaps find slightly fatiguing during long extended listening sessions. Overall, they deliver an intricate and extremely dynamic musical presentation. They continue Grado Lab's venerable tradition of made-in-the-USA quality, as well as the slight tendency to be a bit uncomfortable due to the foam mesh earpads —- which can be remedied a bit by gently bending the headband to better conform to the top of the head. The available Grado 'soft' style headphone earpads ($10) may also help alleviate the issue for some wearers. The SR325i can be cleanly-powered by most portable audio players, but we definitely recommend portable users get a dedicated quality head-amp of some sort to fully maximize the 325i's excellent sonic potential. In particular, a tube-stage headphone amplifier -- like our HeadRoom Millett Hybrid -- would be a superb partner to the 325i and would nicely soften the corners of the Grado's precision-edge tonality. If you happen to enjoy the 'forward' approach of Grado's signature tonal presentation, then the SR325i headphone will offer a refined extension of their immersive and robustly detailed sound.
The SR325i are very well-constructed, with the drivers matched to .05db and voice coils made of Grado's ultra-high purity, long crystal, oxygen-free copper. (The 9ft headphone cord, which is straight and attaches to both earpieces in a 'Y' design, is also made of this quality copper cabling.) They have the usual Grado flexible, leather-covered headband and simple metal height adjusters connecting the SR325i aluminum alloy-flanked earcups to the headband, allowing for up and down adjustment plus full 360 degree rotation. This feature is ideal for laying the headphones down flat -- perfect for storage or traveling. The SR325i cable comes terminated to a full-size 1/4" inch plug — if you need to plug into a 1/8" minijack on your source, you'll need the Grado 1/4"-to-1/8" mini-plug cable adapter which is sold on our 'Cable Manufacturers' webpage.
