Grado SR 225

Probably one of our favorites of the Grado line, the SR225s are, to our ears, amongst the best-sounding open-backed headphones available at this price. The strong suit of the SR225 headphone is the intensity of its "you-are-there-on-the-bandstand" sound and its textural, eye-blinking musical impact. The SR225 surely has that in spades. The bass response is tight and focused while the mids/highs, although perhaps slightly "peaky" with certain recordings and/or sources, are significantly more refined-sounding and better controlled than in the Grado SR60 model. The SR225 can work ok with a portable audio player, but we highly recommend portable users get some type of head-amp for a better detailed and overall smoother tonality. The musical presentation will also gain added dynamic 'quickness', a stronger bottom-end punch, and more sonic authority with a quality headphone amp along for the ride. Regarding the ergonomics, some listeners claim the SR225 are a bit uncomfortable to wear due to the basic headband design and mesh foam earpads; we think they're OK if you gently bend the headband slightly to better conform to the top of the head for a more personalized fit. The available Grado 'soft' style headphone earpads ($10) may also help alleviate the issue for some sensitive listeners.

The SR225 are very well-constructed, with drivers matched to .05dB and voice coils made of Grado Labs' ultra-high purity, long crystal, oxygen-free copper. They have a straight-forward, flexible headband and simple metal height adjusters that connect the earpieces to the headband, allowing up and down adjustment plus 360 degree rotation. This feature is ideal for laying the headphones down flat for storage or traveling. The straight connecting "Y" cable measures roughly 7.5ft and attaches to both earcups. It comes terminated to a full-size 1/4" inch plug.
