Grado SR 80

If you happen to be using a dedicated/portable headphone amp and would like to take a slight step up in Grado sound quality from the entry-level SR60 model, you could maybe try the SR80. They have good dynamics, with fairly punchy bass response and clean-sounding mids & highs. Like a few earpad-type headphones, these can be a bit uncomfortable for some listeners due to the earpad texture, but are usually OK for most wearers if you gently bend the headband slightly to better conform to the top of the head which will help to take some pressure off the ears. The SR80 can usually be decently powered by most portable audio players like iPods, Mp3s, or laptop/PCs, but any headphone amp is likely an excellent add-on for maximized sonic punch, soundstage image clarity, dynamic range extension, and musical detail resolution.

The SR80 use a densely pored foam-material donut-type earpad that does not completely cover the driver -- Grado Labs now calls this the "Large" earpad variety -- and this earpad style has a cut-out center & makes a ring around the outer edge of the earcup. Grado has also come out with a new, softer earpad -- appropiately called the "Soft" style -- which is somewhat more comfy-feeling and made of a slightly softer grade of foam. Grado earpads can be purchased separately on our HeadRoom 'HeadPhone Accessories' webpage and both earpad types are interchangeable with all Grado Labs SR / RS headphones. The SR80 maintain the standard Grado Labs flexible vinyl-covered headband design & basic metal height adjusters that connect the earcups to the headband, thus allowing up & down adjustment plus 360 degree rotation. This feature becomes handy for laying the headphones down flat for storage or transit. The straight 7.5ft headphone cord attaches to both earcups in a "Y" connection and comes terminated to a 1/8" (3.5mm) inch 'mini-plug' jack.
