Beyerdynamic DT 770 M
The DT770 headphone has long reigned as one of the kings of the sealed-earcup headphone category so beyerdynamic wisely offers several different DT770 models. The DT770-M edition has an 80-ohm impedance rating making it better suited for use with weak-amped portable audio souces like iPods, Mp3 players, & laptop/PCs versus its more power-hungry 250-ohm "audiophile oriented" sister models. However, we still feel the DT770M remains much better served by the clean drive and improved sonic control offered by any dedicated head-amp. Beyerdynamic states the DT770M is specially well-designed for drummers/bassists and for FOH close-monitoring applications on stage & in the studio; some listeners feel the sound signature to be bass-driven with substantial upper treble roll-off in spots. The 770M can also be succesfully employed in a variety of reference settings where an efficient sealed-back headphone that's capable of good extension deep into the bass bracket is required. The claimed minus -35dB of ambient noise attenuation is likely a bit optimistic in real world settings; expect somewhere around -15dB to -20dB, still very respectable ambient noise blocking ability for a full-size headphone. Interestingly, beyer claims the weight of the diaphragm and moving coil elements of the DT770M is approximately only 20% compared to other similar headphones; that might prove to be a useful factor in alleviating premature listening fatigue during those extra-long recording sessions or while performing intensely analytical audio work. Although ultimately not as truly clear throughout the entire sonic spectrum as the no-volume-control DT770 model -- perhaps due to the resistor value of the cable slider mechanism -- the DT770M delivers excellent tone given its closed-back earcup and provides solid timbral detail well-suited for its particular application.
The basic black-matte color cosmetics of DT770M also differ noticeably from the slicker grey-silver looks of the 250-ohm 'audiophile' DT770 edition. The DT770M black earpads are the large-size circumaural type that fully surround the ear and they're well-padded with an extra-soft pleather material. The clamping force of the headband is quite securely snug to aid in noise-blocking but its not overly tight -- you should still be able to hear at least some of what's happening around you. The DT770-M headphone is hard-wired with a straight 9ft cord that exits from the left earcup and which contains a built-in slider control handy for quick volume adjustments on the fly. The cable is terminated to a gold-plated 1/8" [3.5mm] mini-plug and a larger full-size adapter is conveniently provided in the package. A 2-year manufacturer's product warranty is standard with all beyerdynamic headphones.
