Ultrasone PROline 650

The Ultrasone 650 Proline are a sealed-earcup headphone largely geared for professional applications and serious audiophile users. They have a slightly warm -- but fortunately not overly "boomy" -- bass response while the high-end treble ranges remain very dynamic and quite crystalline-sounding. The mid-ranges typically tend to be a bit recessed around the vocals, giving some slight sense of discontinuity to the overall presentation, but that is probably a small quibble with this PROLine model. The overall soundstage signature is quite forward-sounding and may be especially well-suited to studio recording work or radio/DJ/engineering reference where monitoring mid-to-high frequency audio detail is critical. The Ultrasone ProLine 650 feature unique gold-plated element drivers along with a fairly stiff impedance rating of 75ohms @ 1kHz so they're not easily driven to cleanly dynamic audio performance by most portable player devices without the use of a dedicated (portable) headphone amp along for the ride. Please allow around 100-200 hrs of playtime for the ProLine 650 headphones to 'burn-in', relax, and smooth out a bit.

An interesting feature of Ultrasone headphones is their proprietary "S-Logic" design marketed as a spatially expansive soundstage simulacrum which we, frankly, don't really hear as such. Although the image does seem to get 'pushed' up a bit higher in the head, it doesn't quite duplicate sonics coming from an external source meters away as claimed; Actually, that would be a hard feat for any headphone that's not truly surround-sound (SRS) enabled!

These full-size Ultrasone cans are constructed of a new-fangled all-plastic polymer headband that is fitted with hinged/swiveling earcups so you can fold the headphones into a lumpy bundle for traveling, transit, or compact storage. The headband can be ever-so-gently bent (slightly) to better accommodate different head sizes. The large earpads are covered in a plush black leather-type material that is also used on the underside of the headband for maximum comfort. A tidy carry pouch for the ProLine 650s is included in the box. The single-sided cord exits from the left earpiece and is terminated with a full-size 1/4" stereo plug. As with all of the Ultrasone ProLine headphones, the killer package comes complete with two detachable cords, one coiled & one straight, an extra pair of "speed-switch" earpads, and a 1/4"-to-1/8" [mini-plug] adapter, all of which are nice pluses. 2 year product warranty via Ultrasone-USA.
