Sennheiser RS 140

The Sennheiser RS140 are wireless closed-back (sealed earcup) headphones offering sound compression and independent balance control for left/right volume adjustment -- a very nice feature for folks who are a bit hard of hearing in one ear. The RS140's high volume output level also compensates for some moderate hearing loss while the unique switchable [on/off] sound compression feature improves speech intelligibility and maximizes sonic clarity for television and film dialogue. The 'sealed' earcup design provides a good degree of isolation and decently minimizes external noise. So if you want to listen to the news, sports, talk radio or music without hearing the bansheeing kids or disturbing the spouse by cranking the TV volume up to rock concert levels, the RS140 is a superb wireless choice. Like many sealed headphones, the overall sonic signature is slightly on the boxy side with a tiny shallowness in the mids/highs and a slightly thin bass response. These are still fairly clear up & down the audible frequency range, so although the RS140 would not be a headphone for demanding audiophile listening uses, it could be a great candidate for folks looking for external (ambient) noise suppression and quite acceptable wireless sound quality. However, as with most wireless headphones, keep in mind that background static can rarely prove problematic -- especially in localized environments with high levels of EMI (electromagnetic) or RFI (radio frequency) interference.

The RS140 base range is 100 meters as stated by Sennheiser. That might vary depending on obstructions or barriers in the line of transmission from the base unit but it should still have a decent reach inside and outside the home for the majority of users. 3 'built-in' separate wireless channels are available on the RS140 headphones for signal transmission from the base unit to the headphones to avoid any possible audio interference. The headphones have large sealed-back [closed] circumaural earpads covered in velour and a full-size headband that is fairly lightweight (only 15 oz.) and comfortable considering it carries two AAA NiMH batteries & assorted electronics. The base transmitter doubles as a recharging station by simply hanging the headphones on the base. The headphones should operate for around 20 hours per charge. A full 2-year product warranty is provided by Sennheiser and all connector cables necessary for hooking up the unit are included in the RS140 package.
