The AKG K142 HD are clear-sounding, musically impressive consumer or even 'pro-level' headphones that are well-sized for both travel use and home/office listening due to uncommonly compact, tidy dimensions for audiophile-caliber cans. The K142 HD delivers excellent fidelity to the source meaning iPod/iPhone folks will benefit from lossless or uncompressed files for best acoustic results. These headphones offer outstanding tonal transparency at this price so violins and guitars are presented with a natural grain-free timbre that, again, is uncommon to hear in this category and pricepoint. Bass response is certainly there and well-extended, but the usual AKG signature sound featuring a tightly defined, controlled bottom-end response remains with the K142 HD. So it is a great headphone recommended for most listeners except perhaps deep hip-hop fans or bass-head types needing big booming bass response in their sound.
The look of the AKG K142HD brings together the best of professional utilitarian design and flashy cosmetics; we find the beige-on-aluminum approach pretty darn swanky overall. The K142 HD dimensions are largely 'on-ear' but it definitely skews towards a somewhat larger sizing within the supra-aural/on-ear category. Given the light weight of the headphones, its overall fit remains extremely comfortable for a supra-aural design and the wearing ergonomics of this can are well-balanced for listeners both large and small.
