NEW! We've recently seen a slew of top-shelf noise-canceling designs arriving from the top headphone makers in the industry and the Audio Technica ATH-ANC9 will rival any of them in terms of sound quality purity and acoustic performance. Easily manageable circumaural 'around the ear' size allows for easy transit and use without the cumbersome heaviness or bulky fit of larger NC headphones. The ATH-ANC9 headphones raise the stakes on the active noise-canceling category with 3 discrete levels of proprietary 'QuietPoint' technology claiming a 95% reduction of ambient noise. iPhone / smartphone telecommunication-ready with detachable mic cable included.
Product Features:
- Three levels of noise-canceling optimized for office, study or airline
- Excellent musical detail and sound quality performance
- Plush memory foam earcups and headband cushions
- Durable, extra-flexible headband design
- Comfortable 'easy on the ears' lightweight fit
- Rated 35 hour battery life
What's In The Box:
- Travel + storage case
- (1) Detachable cable with iPhone/smartphone-compatible mic
- (1) Detachable audio cable
- (1) AAA battery
- (2) Airline plug and 1/4" stereo plug adapters
Applications:
We used to poo-poo Noise-Cancelling technology until manufacturers began making great-sounding 'NC' cans (sometime in the late 2000s) that actually worked well at the application. Often the preferred choice for travel and portable listening, the best noise-cancelling headphones available today provide both thorough ambient noise reduction and excellent musical reproduction. Case in point, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9, perhaps the best-sounding headphones we've heard in the category to date at HeadRoom. A performance step-up from the less expensive Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b model, the coolest ANC9 feature is the three stages of active noise-cancellation that are user-selectable according to your listening environment. Employ the 'Aircraft' NC stage for very noisy situations like airline and train commuting; milder levels of isolation are available with 'Office' or 'Study' settings which allow you to remain aware of your environment and/or hear conversation if so desired. The ATH-ANC 9 employs dual tiny microphones imbedded into each full-size [circumaural] earcup to sense the noise pressure around your ears and effectively exterminates disturbing frequencies under 1,000kHz. We found distracting office chatter completely gone and the loud hum of air conditioners or engines effectively quieted on the highest NC setting. Musically, the Audio-Technica out-performs almost any other headphone we've heard in the NC field in overall sound quality, including those famous "four letter" models ubiquitous in airports. The ATH-ANC9's bass response is pleasingly plump and surprisingly well-textured without "one note" low-end bloat -- always a difficult balance to achieve -- and the critical vocals and midranges exhibit no trace of the edgy grit heard in many other NC designs, so these are superb headphones for singer/songwriter fare, acoustic music and jazz recordings. Rockers will likewise appreciate the clarity of electric instruments and the airy highs extension which lends air and shimmer to the upper treble ranges, a welcome benefit for classical and orchestral music as well. We also thankfully did not suffer from the irregular "vertigo" feeling that some folks get when listening to actively powered NC headphones for extended periods of time. Our jaded HeadRoom review team places these at the very front of the pack of all the great high-quality NC models recently released in the industry.
In keeping with the demands of today's mobile traveler, the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 is fully smartphone-compatible and includes a detachable cable with a microphone and standard 3-button remote control cable for Apple devices. A regular 'audio-only' cable measuring approximately 4ft in length is also supplied. The headphones will still operate without batteries or the NC features being engaged, but we clearly hear better sonic performance and a more robust, punchy sound with the 'active' battery-powered Noise-Cancelling activated. The sealed-back earcups are circumaural in size and will typically fit around-the-ear on most wearers. The headband and earcup padding is well-done and plushly cushioned which also helps to minimize audio 'leakage' audible by the person next to you when jamming loudly [er, "jamming loudly" not recommended! ~ ed.]. Pros: Decent noise cancellation.
Cons: Dull sound. Lacks in bass and highs.
Overall I would say these are ok. If you can get these for a good deal then by all means get them but they have a lot of flaws and are pricy.
