The Audio-Technica headphone train always keeps moving and a recent arrival at the HeadRoom station fresh from Japan is the sweet-looking ATH-ES55 portable on-ear headphones expressly designed for mobile listening. Sweet-sounding mids/highs are acoustically impressive in tone and clarity thanks to bobbin-wound copper voice coils with 40mm drivers. However, resident bass-heads may need a bit more oomph and bottom-octave impact for hip-hop, R&B or funk styles. Nevertheless, lovers of clean detail and musicality not needing big bass presence will still find punchy low-end extension -- just not big booty-shaking bass response which, frankly, is always a tough feat for small on-ear [supra-aural] cans. The typically 'open' transparency and balanced mid-range presentation we've come to expect from top audiophile-level Audio-Technica headphones remains evident in this little, handily foldable/collapsible ES55 model but without (of course) quite the vast soundstage depth or lightning-fast dynamic extension of AT's top-tier and significantly more expensive headphones. Great efficiency without a headphone amp required means nothing extra needed on the road with your iPod, iPhone or computer to get bell-like definition and clear listening in an easily toteable 'on-ear' size.
The Audio Technica ATH-ES55 come in black-matte color with nifty hairline brushed gunmetal accents on the earcups offering sleek understated style. The headband swivels and locks flat for storage and an AT soft storage/travel bag is included. Cord length is approximately 4ft, nice for mobile listening without getting tangled up in blue.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Amazing clarity, non-microphonic cable
Cons: headband could be more comfortable, no case
They are a bit delicate and I would have liked a slim hard case for them- but they fold for next-to-nothing flatness. A detachable cord would have been nice. AKG has both these features- but I went with AT for the sound. AKG's were great too, but a bit too much in-your-face. For short listening periods, the AKG could well sound more exciting, but for extended listening, the clarity and smoothness of the AT's won it for me.
AT also has a slightly larger model (forget the model) which might sit better on/over your ears- the 55's are smallish. Recommended without hesitation.
