One of our favorite recommendations for cost-effective, closed / sealed headphone listening, the Denon AH-D1001K delivers a slightly warm but well balanced presentation. Perfectly capable of being driven by portable players, and even better with a headphone amp, these cans deliver a terrific listening experience. They are also way better looking and built than any headphone has a right to be at this price.

Frequency Response for the DENON AH-D1001K

Building a superb-sounding sealed can is no easy feat but DENON has managed to devise an entire closed headphone model series that are well-engineered at every step of the way. The AH-D1001K model offers a great punchy sound and excellent musical detail resolution along with an impressive timbral accuracy that compares favorably side-by-side with much pricier headphones. The D1001K's highs are well-extended with little detectable graininess, while the bottom-end bass response is full and punchy without mushy bloating. It's actually a fabulous headphone given its sealed-cup design and highly ergonomic supra-aural earpad sizing. We recommend pairing this can with any quality headphone amp for fully maximized clarity, dynamic range 'quickness', and an authoritative tonal presentation; otherwise, depending on your audio source, there's a chance the D-1001K may not reveal its surprising sonic potential, especially with weaker mobile audio devices like MP3 players or iPods. But even without an amp along for the ride, expect this little can to offer eye-opening sound quality and top-notch wearing comfort that rates about the best in the mid-sized 'closed earpad headphone' category.

The DENON AH-D1001 come in a matte-grey on brushed gun-metal look that is nicely understated and elegant-looking. The extremely lightweight frame headband on the D-1001k offers good sizing adjustment with a locking mechanism that allows the band to expand to fit listeners of all head sizes quite well; it sure is a comfy feel on the head. The D1001 mid-sized supra-aural earcups rest gently on the outer part of the earlobes for most listeners and the deep black smooth glove-pleather earpads offer great comfort even during long listening sessions. The isolation factor is decent but will not completely attenuate all ambient noise due to the smaller earpad sizing and the loose comfy fit. Still, the D1001K does provide respectable "leakage" protection from the earcups to the outside world, important if listening in very quiet settings where you don't want to disturb your neighbor. We recommend allowing a minimum of 50-100hrs of 'burn-in' play time for the headphone to sound its very best. The headphone cord is a modular arrangement; a 3.5ft non-detachable Y-cord extends from the headphones and a 6ft extension cord is provided in the packaging allowing for approximately a 3 meter cable, give or take. The cord terminates to a 3.5mm (1/8") mini-plug. The standard 1-year manufacturer's warranty serviced exclusively through DENON worldwide. Excellent
Posted by Pez11 from NYC Metro on 2010-03-02

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Bass is tight. Highs are details.
Cons: Mids slightly less refined.

They deserve to be on any top ten list, considering the price.
Build quality is better than what I expected.
They are driven quite well by a portable. Love them with the Cowon iaudio7.
Buy them, and you will not regret it.

My best headphone purchase so far !
Posted by StratCat from Cuernavaca, Mexico on 2010-02-11

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great sound, comfortable, nice looking, great price
Cons: None that I can think of

After toying around with IEM's for a few months, I decided I needed a proper set of cans for home listening and started the search for my first full size headphones.

So, after maybe a month of investigating various alternatives, these 'phones came up at the top of the list with great reviews, good looks, and a price that was just right.

I have to say again what the title of my review says: this has been my best headphone purchase so far: these 'phones blew me away from the first listen with their sound, like practically no other set of headphones has done. While the bass is a tad emphasized, it's not a sloppy, boomy, 'in-da-club' kind of bass, but nicely controlled, with impact and texture - you can feel the bass, not only hear it, yet the notes and timbres are there, easily discernible - lending an overall warm presentation to the sound.

That is not to say that the headphones are lacking in treble, not at all, treble is there shining and sparkling with no trace of harshness while the mids sound just right, maybe a bit recessed for some, but I hear them lush and rich.

These headphones also amazed me with their resolution of detail: out of a humble Sony portable CD player, I could for the first time listen to the benches creaking as the musicians repositioned on their seats, and the flipping of the score pages. I could go on for pages and pages here, but I think you get the point: these are an absolutely fabulous pair of headphones at a great price.

Outstanding Headphones
Posted by John from Ann Arbor, MI on 2010-02-09

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great sound for the price, good comfort
Cons: Mediocre build quality

I picked up the AH-D1001K looking for a good pair of relatively portable full-size headphones, and also as the subject of a simple recabling job. Overall, I was not disappointed.

The comfort of these headphones is quite good. The ear pads nearly fit around the ears, with the bottom of the pads just resting on the ear lobes. I think the reason these might be classified as on-ear headphones is that they are relatively shallow, and I find that my ears touch the insides of ear cups. Overall, these are one of the most comfortable headphones I have tried for cans of this size; I would say they are second only to the Bose Triports that I used to have (to clarify, the Bose headphones have the drivers angled so they fire toward the ears from the front, which creates more space inside the ear cups -- my ears don't touch the insides of the Bose headphones).

As for build quality, this is the only area where the D1001s are a little lackluster. The ear cups themselves are solid enough, but the headband assembly seems a little flimsy, and the adjusters are somewhat sloppy and click and clack cheaply. Shaking the headphones around, they rattle a lot (though you don't notice this when wearing them). I can't attest to their durability, but I have my doubts.

The sound quality on these headphones is very good for the price. The bass is strong and extends pretty well into the low frequencies, though it is perhaps not as tight as it could be (i.e. bass attacks don't have quite enough impact). The mids are well-represented, and the treble is crisp and clear, though perhaps a bit recessed. Overall, I would say that these carry a similar sound signature to Denon's other full-size headphones, such as the AH-D2000. However, the soundstage is much more cramped on the D1001s -- inevitably due to the smaller size and profile.

Overall, the D1001s are good, versatile closed headphones for the price.
