DENON AH-D1001K
One of our biggest recommendations for high-quality cost-effective closed-back headphone listening, the Denon AH-D1001K delivers a slightly warm but well-balanced musical presentation. Perfectly capable of being driven by portable players and sounding even better with a headphone amp, these cans deliver a terrific audio experience. They are also great-looking and extremely comfortable, perhaps more so than any headphone near this price.

Applications:
Building a superb-sounding sealed headphone is no easy feat but DENON has managed to devise an entire 'closed-back' model series that's well-engineered at all levels. The 'on-ear' AH-D1001K model offers a great punchy sound and excellent musical detail resolution along with an impressive timbral accuracy that compares favorably side-by-side with much pricier headphones. The D1001k's highs are well-extended with little detectable grain or edge, while the bottom-end bass response is full & punchy without mushy bloating. It's actually a fabulous headphone given its sealed construction and highly ergonomic supra-aural [on-ear] sizing. We recommend pairing this can with a headphone amp if demanding fully maximized clarity and dynamic range extension for an authoritative tonal presentation; otherwise, depending on your audio source, the D-1001 may not reveal its surprising sonic potential, especially with weaker mobile audio devices like MP3 players or iPods. But even without an amp along for the ride, expect this little can to offer eye-opening sound quality and top-notch wearing comfort that rates about the best in the mid-sized 'closed/on-ear' headphone category.
The DENON AH-D1001k come in a matte-grey/black on brushed gun-metal look that is nicely understated and elegant-looking. The extremely lightweight frame headband on the D-1001 offers good sizing adjustment with a locking mechanism that allows the band to expand to fit listeners of all head sizes quite well; it sure is a comfy feel on the head. The D1001 mid-sized supra-aural earcups rest gently on the outer part of the earlobes for most listeners and the deep black smooth glove-pleather earpads offer great comfort even during long listening sessions. The isolation factor is decent but will not completely attenuate all ambient noise due to the smaller earpad sizing and the loose comfy fit. Still, the D1001 does provide respectable "leakage" protection from the earcups to the outside world, important if listening in very quiet settings where you don't want to disturb your neighbor. We recommend allowing a minimum of 50-100hrs of 'burn-in' play time for the headphone to sound its very best. The headphone cord is a modular arrangement; a 3.5ft non-detachable Y-cord extends from the headphones and a 6ft extension cord is provided in the packaging allowing for approximately a 3 meter cable, give or take. The cord terminates to a 3.5mm (1/8") mini-plug. The standard 1-year manufacturer's warranty is serviced exclusively through DENON with many worldwide service centers.
Here's the DENON AH-D1001S model that is 100% identical to this headphone except for nifty Grey/Silver color earcups.

Pros: Comfortable, and great sound
Cons: Weak build and bad manufacturer care
I loved everything else, yet trying to communicate with the manufacturers to get them repaired has become hours number bashing and engaged tones.

Pros: Bass is tight. Highs are details.
Cons: Mids slightly less refined.
Build quality is better than what I expected.
They are driven quite well by a portable. Love them with the Cowon iaudio7.
Buy them, and you will not regret it.

Pros: Great sound, comfortable, nice looking, great price
Cons: None that I can think of
So, after maybe a month of investigating various alternatives, these 'phones came up at the top of the list with great reviews, good looks, and a price that was just right.
I have to say again what the title of my review says: this has been my best headphone purchase so far: these 'phones blew me away from the first listen with their sound, like practically no other set of headphones has done. While the bass is a tad emphasized, it's not a sloppy, boomy, 'in-da-club' kind of bass, but nicely controlled, with impact and texture - you can feel the bass, not only hear it, yet the notes and timbres are there, easily discernible - lending an overall warm presentation to the sound.
That is not to say that the headphones are lacking in treble, not at all, treble is there shining and sparkling with no trace of harshness while the mids sound just right, maybe a bit recessed for some, but I hear them lush and rich.
These headphones also amazed me with their resolution of detail: out of a humble Sony portable CD player, I could for the first time listen to the benches creaking as the musicians repositioned on their seats, and the flipping of the score pages. I could go on for pages and pages here, but I think you get the point: these are an absolutely fabulous pair of headphones at a great price.
