DENON AH-D1001K
One of our favorite recommendations for cost-effective, closed / sealed headphone listening, the Denon AH-D1001K delivers a slightly warm but well balanced presentation. Perfectly capable of being driven by portable players, and even better with a headphone amp, these cans deliver a terrific listening experience. They are also way better looking and built than any headphone has a right to be at this price.

Applications:
Building a superb-sounding sealed can is no easy feat but DENON has managed to devise an entire closed headphone model series that are well-engineered at every step of the way. The AH-D1001K model offers a great punchy sound and excellent musical detail resolution along with an impressive timbral accuracy that compares favorably side-by-side with much pricier headphones. The D1001K's highs are well-extended with little detectable graininess, while the bottom-end bass response is full and punchy without mushy bloating. It's actually a fabulous headphone given its sealed-cup design and highly ergonomic supra-aural earpad sizing. We recommend pairing this can with any quality headphone amp for fully maximized clarity, dynamic range 'quickness', and an authoritative tonal presentation; otherwise, depending on your audio source, there's a chance the D-1001K may not reveal its surprising sonic potential, especially with weaker mobile audio devices like MP3 players or iPods. But even without an amp along for the ride, expect this little can to offer eye-opening sound quality and top-notch wearing comfort that rates about the best in the mid-sized 'closed earpad headphone' category.
The DENON AH-D1001 come in a matte-grey on brushed gun-metal look that is nicely understated and elegant-looking. The extremely lightweight frame headband on the D-1001k offers good sizing adjustment with a locking mechanism that allows the band to expand to fit listeners of all head sizes quite well; it sure is a comfy feel on the head. The D1001 mid-sized supra-aural earcups rest gently on the outer part of the earlobes for most listeners and the deep black smooth glove-pleather earpads offer great comfort even during long listening sessions. The isolation factor is decent but will not completely attenuate all ambient noise due to the smaller earpad sizing and the loose comfy fit. Still, the D1001K does provide respectable "leakage" protection from the earcups to the outside world, important if listening in very quiet settings where you don't want to disturb your neighbor. We recommend allowing a minimum of 50-100hrs of 'burn-in' play time for the headphone to sound its very best. The headphone cord is a modular arrangement; a 3.5ft non-detachable Y-cord extends from the headphones and a 6ft extension cord is provided in the packaging allowing for approximately a 3 meter cable, give or take. The cord terminates to a 3.5mm (1/8") mini-plug. The standard 1-year manufacturer's warranty serviced exclusively through DENON worldwide. Pros: Shouldn't be this comfortable, Great sound quality at a great price.
Cons: Too large and fragile for some persons' portability needs.
Would you recommend this product: Yes
Wow, these are beyond impressive. They are extremely light, have superb sound quality, and have comfort levels that actually exceed some full-size cans. The modular cable will have you upgrading it (Grado extension at the very least) if you're serious about extracting the most aural juice from it. When it comes to on-ears, these Denon AH-D1001K sit at the top in almost every conceivable way.
Highs 4.5/5 - The highs are certainly sparkly and detailed. Resolution is quite fantastic as well, and they come with no harshness or fatigue with them. They can be slightly grainy like a bowl of cheerios, but for the most part, even the most discerning listener would be perfectly happy with the notes up here.
Mids 5/5 - Many people can't stand recessed mids, neither can I. The mids here are in the front row, participating with the other ranges, and they bring along oodles of detail with them. The mids are comparable to the Audio Technica AD700. In fact, I think they best the big brother Denon AH-D2000's in this regard. Forward mids breathe life into the music, and these cans certainly are refreshing like Aquafina water.
Lows 4.5/5 - They are quite textured and sonically pleasing. Depending on your taste buds, these might not have enough or perhaps too much. In either case, they don't blot out the other ranges which is good. The low notes though could use a bit more "tightness" to go along with the subterranean deepness that these are surprisingly capable of. For the price, this is outstanding.
Soundstage 4/5 - When watching movies or playing games, the soundstage has a fairly large amount of depth and is noticeably wide and reasonably tall as well. The relatively small cup-size can't produce a soundscape compared to an AKG K702, but they still provide a great image to your games/movies/music.
Detail Retrieval 4/5 - I wouldn't use these to mix with, but when used for music, these will still bring a smile to your face. You might not hear the fleas drinking 40's, but for the most part many listeners will be stunned by the new details that were obscured in their music before.
Value 5/5 - To me, the Audio Technica M50's offer a more detailed and just downright engaging experience (yes, I love those cans : ). But for those stepping into the wallet-robbing world of audiophiles, these cans will staple your jaw to the floorboard.
Denon AH-D1001K = He's small, but he carry's a BIG stick.
*These need about 25hrs. of burn-in before settling on the sound characteristics. Also, these do a great job of keeping your music private, but doesn't give you much privacy with external sounds.

If you are looking for a closed, portable headphone with good bass and great detail, I highly recommend the AH-D1001. The beauty of these is that they are circumaural, which is hard to find in a quality headphone that qualifies as a portable. Smaller than they look in photos, they can be used at home plugged into your amp, or while you are outside the house plugged into your DAP. I will say that they are not truly portable, in that they neither fold nor collapse, and do not have the highest degree of isolation for a closed headphone, but I frequently use them at the office, or otherwise take them with me when I am looking for a high quality headphone that I can put in a bag. On the minus side: while they are more comfortable than your typical earpad headphone, they are not as comfortable for me as their full-size counterparts, in that the small size of the cups causes the driver covers to actually touch my ears slightly, which causes pressure and some mild discomfort after a few hours of listening. I would not let that discourage you from picking these up though, given that most headphones have some slight comfort issues, and these are minor with the AH-D1001, especially considering the stellar sound and portability.

Pros: Clear sound, pleasant low/mid/high balance, great price!
Cons: Can't think of any...
Would you recommend this product: Yes
After purchasing my Denon D2000s, I decided to pick these up for my girlfriend. Of course, I couldn't give them to her without breaking them in first :-)
Through the break-in process, I feel like the sound changed a good amount. The result is fantastic. The sound is clean, articulate, and really pleasing to my ear. It has the nice, strong (but not bloated) bass that seems to be characteristic of Denon headphones. The mids sound good to my ear (so maybe they're SLIGHTLY recessed?) and the highs are nice and crisp.
They look very stylish and are über comfy. I believe they are declared to be circumaural headphones and they fit around my small ears just fine. I can imagine though, that some people with huge ears might have a hard time stuffing their ears in the (relatively) small cups. In any case, the pads are soft, the phones are light, and there is hardly any compression, so I don't see how these could possibly be uncomfortable for anyone.
These headphones are terrific sounding, look great, so comfortable that you'll forget they're on, and ultimately are an incredible deal. Just buy them!

Pros: Very good bass, Comfortable, Great Looking, Light
Cons: Not the best isolation, could have been more solidly built, not for big-eared people
Would you recommend this product: Yes
These headphones are the best headphones I currently own. They are light and comfortable for hours of listening, and the ear cups swivel to accommodate many sizes and shapes of the head. The bass on these headphones is great, but not at all overpowering. Also, the detail and sound quality is comparable to headphones that are $50-$100 more. Personally, I would only buy headphones that were at least $150 more for any definitely noticeable improvements. I do think, though, that the headphones could have been built more solidly than the plastic that is used. However, they are still durable enough for home and office use.

Pros: Light, uber comfortable, amazing sound quality.
Cons: Long burn in.
Would you recommend this product: Yes
Looking for a cheap, entry level headphone, these are an amazing buy.
Sound Quality- Denon did an amazing job, I hear crisp, clean highs and vivid, strong lows. Not a beat is missed. The cans easily handle anything from heavy trance such as infected mushroom to smooth jazz such as Pat Metheny. Movies sound great, videogames are incredibly real and exciting.
Comfort- They're like pillows around your ears. They're also super light. What else can I say?
Look & Feel- The clean, dark headphones are easy on the eyes. I wouldn't hesitate if I wanted to take them in public.
Durability- I haven't tested their durability much, but they have withstood nearly everyday use at my desk. The 'phones are made of durable plastic, so I consider them reliable.
Overall I am very happy to have bought these cans.
A side note- Although they might be cheaper on sites like amazon, headroom has awesome customer service and they ship your stuff right away. Go with headroom.

Pros: Good Comfort, nice styling, good performance for price
Cons: Feel slightly delicate
Would you recommend this product: Yes
Being new to the world of headphones, I bought the Denon AHD1001K after reading many a positive review. I had heard that the bass wasn't as thudding as perhaps some listeners would have liked, but not beeing into the low range freqencies meant this wouldn't have much effect on me!
I wanted a set of cans to use with my ipod for when I was out and about, as such, I didn't want a set that were sealed. The 1001k pretty much ticked all the boxes for me, good value, comfortable and if you're not a hardcore audiophile, the sound is more than acceptable. The bass is maybe a little lacking, but overall the timbre is quite lovely. The cable is a nice length (3.5 feet) which is ideal for portable use, and obviously it comes with an extension and adapter. Nice clean metallic styling aswell.
I would reccommend these cans to anyone looking to upgrade to a nice sounding set without breaking the bank. The first album I listened to was "fragile" by Yes, and I immediately noticed the improvement from my previous sennheiser budget headphones. I am a totally satisfied customer.
Hope this helps any prospective buyers!

Pros: Great Sound, Comfortable
Cons: Awkward Size
Would you recommend this product: Yes
First off, they sound excellent. The mids and highs are present and accounted for. The accuracy is incredible, so much so that you'll hear things in your tracks that you've never heard before. The lows are accurate, but could stand to be a little more powerful. They lack a certain amount of 'oomph'. But you get what you pay for, and for the price of these, it can't be beat. Seriously a great value.
Though they're not listed as full-size, they fit around my ears completely. They isolate me from the world just enough that I don't feel "too isolated", yet they don't disturb people around me. They are so comfortable you could wear them for hours and not realize it. The size is a little awkward, however. They don't fold which makes them a bit weird and large to carry around. The construction feels a little flimsy, so it's best to be careful how you handle them.
In general a tremendous sounding, nice looking, comfortable set of headphones with terrific value. If you're looking at becoming an audiophile, this is a good place to start.

Pros: Great sound with or without amp, look nice
Cons: The plug is a bit large, can be uncomfortable after long use (hour plus)
Would you recommend this product: Yes
I would recommend these headphones to anyone who is looking for great sound, sturdy build, and good value. I bought the silver pair for much less ( I believe they were being discontinued) and just love them. I use them mainly at home and they are terrific at sealing out background noises. Highly recommended.
