NEW! THE DENON AH-D600 headphones have big shoes to fill given the raging success of the original high-end DENON headphone line, discontinued summer 2012. But instead of playing it safe and following up big winners with cheesy simulacrums of previous designs, DENON engineers have boldly decided to revamp their entire oeuvre from the ground up. Now with newly engineered 50mm free-edge nano fiber driver technology and a 'flat-EQ' tuning process, the D600 presents an impactful tone replete with insightful musical detail. Solid acoustic engagement meets modern convenience with a detachable smartphone / iPhone mic'd cable controller. After-market DENON app downloads allow customized EQ settings tailored for the AH-D600 plus remote iPhone play-back features.

The DENON AH-600 are a completely new headphone from the Japanese audio masters and share almost nothing in common with any previous DENON models. Starting with a brand-new design and fit ergonomics, DENON engineers have tooled the AH-D600 for both home and portable / street use with a tough-built headband and cool black matte cosmetics. Oversize stitched leather earpads deliver respectable isolation / noise-blocking for commuting purposes and the new heaband egonomics provide excellent wearing comfort for those extra-long work days at the office or jamming on the couch late into the night. Detachable cabling allows use of a standard headphone cord or an iPhone-ready 3-button mic'd cord for hands-free smartphone chat. As a modern plus, after-market DENON apps available via Apple store download provides customized EQ settings tailored specifically for the AH-D600, along with optional 'remote' iPhone play-back features. To our HeadRoom ears, the much-ballyhooed DENON "flat EQ" driver tuning process seems to audibly shelf the top-end extension of the D600, which may perhaps be interpreted as a positive trait for listeners seeking to avoid treble screech or brightness. However, we also hear the out-of-the-box "no-app" [no Apple App EQ used] musical presentation as sounding overly rolled-off, especially with very dynamically extended audiophile recordings. With normal iTunes store-bought music and lower bitrate digital files, this treble reticence becomes more modest but the headphone still lacks the revelatory tonal accuracy and faithfulness to the production of previous top DENON headphones. To be fair, the D600 does have a nicely potent bass response that sounds quite fun with hip-hop and urban styles and, as a 'high-end' Apple iPad / iPhone headset with telecommunication features, the DENON AH-D600 manages to hold its own in that growing category with decent voice/speech intelligibility for calls, so there are some recommendable assets for the smartphone listener on the move who also wants his cans to do double-duty at the home stereo system or office computer.

The DENON AH-D600 headphones have a very sweet-looking black matte color scheme offset with thin wire-chrome flashing and a luster-gray DENON logo emblazoned across the outer earcups. The genuine black leather ear cushions are neatly stiched with soft white wide-thread for some additional style. The overall fit of the AH-D600 headphone seems geared for larger heads & ears and offers full coverage of the earlobes in most cases. A HeadRoom caveat: smaller heads may find the DENON headphone fit overly large and even too loose for correct listening. The two provided detachable 'Y-type' headphone cables extend about 9ft in length (1 standard headphone cable; 1 mic'd iPhone / smartphone headphone cable). The AH-D600 offers slightly improved noise-blocking [isolation] specs compared to previous DENON full-size headphones, so the D600 should do better during travel and transit use, although it will likely not completely block-out all ambient environmental noise in extra-loud settings. There's no headband folding or collapsibility features for easier travel / transit, so a HeadRoom HeadCase remains recommended for portable users. The free 1 year DENON manufacturer's warranty remains serviceable in Mahwah, New Jersey USA only.

Awesome Headphones
Posted by 00Ginji on 2012-11-21

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Extremely Comfortable, Great Sound.
Cons: Design, Plasticky

The D600's are great headphones, I have had the D2000's for a few years now and have had lots a fun with em and plenty of time to "burn" them in. But I have to say the D600's are better right out of the box in term of sound and can't wait to hear them improve over the next few months

In terms of the design, I don't hate it quite as much as the rest of the community seems to but in that sense the new line is definitely is a step back for me. I'm guessing the new design was meant to appeal to the Japanese market or something.

The durability is still good but again the new line falls a little flat in comparison to the previous set of cans.

And last but certainly not least, these are by far the most comfortable headphones I've ever seen. Even after extended listening sessions I've yet to experience any discomfort in my neck or jaw and have had no stuffyness in the ear cups at all.

100% worth the 400 bucks I shelled out for them.

Step back from D5000
Posted by Dexter Morgan from FL on 2012-09-04

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Build, accessories, bass
Cons: Mids, vocals, aesthetics

As a prior owner and fan of the D5000 and D7000 I wanted to give these a go but was pretty disappointed with the sound. The vocals sound very boxed in and have a synthetic or filtered quality about them. The mids in general seem closed in, lacking both emotion and transparency. The bass is improved over the D5000, although still overstated at least it has less bloom and has tightened up. Based on memory I can't recall much difference in the top end but it certainly seems rolled off. Soundstage is acceptable for a closed can. Build and comfort are great but all the plastic is definitely less attractive than the D5000. If these were priced at $300-350 I'd give them better marks but for $500 and as a successor to the D5000 don't expect to be wowed. If I had to recommend these I'd say they will do best with instrumental rock and metal. Any recordings with vocals, especially live and acoustic music will certainly show the D600's inability to reproduce music with any organic qualities.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Clear neat sound. Wide range , comfortable and nice looking
Cons: Little big for people with small heads

I plugged them to a Musical Fidelity Headphone Amp and used a Cary Audio DAC as a Source as well.
