For years we begged Etymotic Research to make a less expensive version of their ER4S and ER4P headphones...and here it is! The ER6 are perfect for business travelers, for workouts at the gym or any other active applications where portability, small size, good sound and excellent isolation from external noise are requirements. Although the highs are a little rolled-off, the mid-range remains well-detailed with a pretty fair bass response. Etymotic Research has done a great job reducing the cost of the ER6 while retaining some of the articulate and well-balanced performance of the ER4P, and though they’re a little more difficult (i.e., deeper into the ear canal) to insert with a good seal and a little harder than the ER4P to drive -- you’ll likely need a portable headphone amp to get the best sonics out of them -- the overall performance is quite excellent for the price.

Although the ER-6 look something like normal earbuds, they're so much more... They are basically miniaturized headphones that totally seal the ear canal thereby providing superb noise blocking (isolation) from external sounds and excellent sound quality -- certainly way better than the sound offered by any 'earbud' design. The small eartips (either pliable silicon rubber or small expanding foam -- try both!) are inserted fairly deeply into the ear canal, thoroughly sealing it off and providing AT LEAST 15-20dB of isolation from external sounds. The "Y" cable is about 4 feet long with equal lengths connected to each earpiece. The input impedance of these micro-cans is 48 Ohms and the sensitivity is 108dB/0.4V, which means they should be OK to drive from most portable players, but we've found that they improve dramatically, especially in the bass response, when used along with a portable headphone amp like our Total AirHead, Total BitHead, Micro, or even the awesome Desktop series of amplifiers!
