Applications:
Leave it to the industry originators of in-ear headphone technology to invent one of the best-sounding, best isolating cellular/smartphone/MP3 player earphone & mic systems on the market. Audiology R&D leader Etymotic Research's HF2 in ear stereo headphones offer excellent overall sound quality due to their balanced armature earpiece design based on their venerable Etymotic ER-4 audiophile earphones. In conjunction with a completely proprietary and very voice-sensitive 'built-in' microphone, the Etymotic HF2 features a single 3-way button that can quickly answer phone calls and control your music at a flick of the music/call switch. Now you can communicate clearly even in extremely noisy environs without fear of missing that critical call.
The Etymotic HF2 provides four different sets of eartip sleeves including both large and small silicon 3-flange tips along with a pair of squishy-foam tips which help deliver thorough ambient noise-blocking ability and a comfortable, personalized fit. The gold-plated straight 3.5mm 4-conductor plug is fully Apple iPhone and BlackBerry compatible and will fit just about any mobile phone or music player accepting the 1/8" [3.5mm] jack connection. A spare set of earphone filters, a handy filter changing tool, and a useful travel pouch also come included in the HF2 packaging. Also includes a manufacturer's 2-year product warranty provided at no extra charge only when proof-purchased from true Etymotic-authorized dealers -- like HeadRoom! Black color only.
CUSTOM FIT OPTIONS: As a very cool extra, optional custom audiologist in-ear molds for the HF2 are available via Etymotic. Any customer purchasing an Etymotic product can register their product at Etymotic.com; after registering, you'll print a voucher from the Etymotic site, then schedule an appointment with an audiologist in the Etymotic network (which can be located through the Etymotic website by entering your zip code). Then take the voucher to the audiologist appointment, the audiologist takes impressions of your inner ears and sends the impressions -- along with the voucher -- to the Ety labs. Customer pays nothing to the audiologist; the lab will contact you for credit card payment ($100usd); the lab then produces the molds and ships them to the customer with the lab compensating the audiologist. BAM! It's a really easy way to get into 'master-level' sound quality performance and great wearing comfort at a very reasonable expense.

Pros: Smooth, musical, well defined
Cons: A little short for my big head
Headroom provided great service and exchanged them for the same price HF2 without any objections so I now have those and a working phone to boot.
What a surprise, the HF2 perform at a much higher level. They are more transparent, better defined, more musical and more effortless. I don't know if this is because of the "lack" of Apple switching features, but I know that I would not buy the HF3 instead even if I had an iFruit player of any sorts.
My Samsung telephone sounds great, but I also have several other higher performing players including a Roland 24/96 recorder and the results are similar. You get an instant improvement when up-sampling from 44.1kHz/16 bit to 88.2 or 192 /24bit with these headphones.

Pros: Sound isolation, headset, button, quality
Cons: controller/microphone a little large
The best part is the sound isolation. For long flights, anywhere else with background noise, these work well.
I was a little worried about two things: durability and cord noise. I have used these day in and day out for over a year, and no worries about reliability. Other reviews I read had said there were issues, but these people must be really hard on their stuff. I put these in my bag, have caught the cord many times, wear them while doing chores etc.. and have never had an issue except for recently breaking the cord clip, which is 3$ to replace. The cord clip is essential, however, for avoiding cord noise, which I think is an issue with all isolation in ear headphones.
I recently bought my wife the updated version with the three button controller, which seems identical except for the extra buttons and and the smaller controller. I actually don't mind the one button as the three button only adds volume, which is easy to control on ipod touch without using the screen, and I find when I have tried hers I end up having to spend a moment to figure out which button is which, instead of just mashing the thing with my hand with the one button controller. Not a big deal, and it is nice that the controller on the new version is a little smaller.
And, I haven't discussed sound quality much, but it is great.
