The toughest audio products to create are those where there is a significant need to keep overall costs low; at some point, you likely have to accept and carefully deal with the expected minor flaws. Well, Etymotic audio engineers have deftly dealt with the demands of affordable-cost product design in developing the MC3, a reasonably priced stereo headset / in-ear headphone that's virtually free of any glaringly obvious faults given the very accessible price. Superb mic clarity as expected from the original audiology leaders Etymotic Research, along with a beautifully refined, crystalline sound that reproduces both voices and music very effectively with authoritative full-range definition. The MC3's tight bass control ensures no bottom-end bloat and the famously soaring mids & highs we've come to expect from Etymotic Research earphones are fully present, open-toned, and smoothly rendered without grain. A unique Ety-patented Helmholtz resonator side branch within the earpiece sound channel removes an intractable, resonant peak found in most other low-cost earphones, allowing the superior level of sound quality heard in the MC3. We're simply rather astonished by the price-versus-performance ratio of this terrific in-ear stereo headset, and can highly recommend it to folks looking for a wonderful audiophile upgrade to their Apple iPhone / iPod Touch-Nano-Shuffle / iPad listening experience without suffering a painful billfold blow-out.

The Etymotic MC3 cord neatly extends about 4ft and terminates in an angled gold-plated 3.5mm mini-plug jack ideal for connectivity into most Apple devices. The MC3 remote and mic are supported only by all iPads, iPod Touch [2/3 gen], Nano [4/5th gen], Shuffle [3rd gen], iPod Classic and iPhone 3GS. Four different types of 'universal fit' eartip sleeve types & sizes are included in the MC3 box; definitely try them all for the best possible in-ear fit and sound quality. As a very cool extra, optional audiologist-customized in-ear molds for are easily available via Etymotic after MC3 purchase; any customer purchasing an Etymotic product can register their product at Etymotic.com.  After registering, you can print a voucher from the Etymotic site, then schedule an appointment with an audiologist in the Etymotic network (which can be located through the Etymotic website by entering your zip code).  You'll then take the voucher to the audiologist appointment, the audiologist will take impressions of your ears and send the impressions  -- along with the voucher -- to the Ety labs. Customer pays nothing to the audiologist; the lab will contact you for credit card payment (for $100  -- a great deal!); the lab then produces the molds and ships them to the customer with the lab compensating the audiologist.  It's a really easy way to get into 'master-level' sound quality performance and great wearing comfort at a very reasonable expense.

Good earbuds; not audibly exciting, but they are adequate for use for music and phone use.

Solid smart-phone headphones
Posted by grizzly from Denver, CO on 2012-11-01

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Good value, durable, decent sound
Cons: remote only works with iPhone

After a fairly disappointing experience with some other in-ear headphones & mics for my smart phone I've been very happy with these. The cables don't tangle or kink, despite being wound and unwound to go in the carrying case regularly. The variety of ear pieces made it simple enough to find the right fit for good sound, comfort, and something that will stay in place even when I'm moving around a lot.

The quality of the mic is pretty good and work while walking or sitting still. The one complaint I have is much more general. There are a lot of android phones out there, but Etymotic and every other manufacturer makes their headphones with iPhone-only features. The useless three buttons are easy enough to ignore, so it is a minor complaint.

Ety sound at a good price
Posted by Chris K from Seattle, WA on 2011-06-14

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Inexpensive, good sound, voucher for $100 ear molds
Cons: Typical Etymotic thin bass

These sound superb, especially for the price. To my ear the bass is a little thin, but if you're listening in a perfectly quiet room the sound is very balanced and detailed.
