The HiFiMAN line of Chinese-engineered audiophile headphones has come a long way in short time and now offers some of the very best cans we've laid our HeadRoom ears upon. The HE-300 differs significantly from HiFiMAN's top planar-magnetic ("Orthodynamic") HE-500, HE5-LE and HE-6 models since the HE-300 is a traditional dynamic driver design, a first for HiFiMAN headphones. In addition, the price of the HE-300 is a bit more affordable for the average music lover, unlike the upscale HE-6 costing well over four figures and the killer HE-500 at twice the price. The HiFiMAN HE-300 sound is detailed but oriented towards a sense of musical engagement over precision with a big, warm bass presentation. The low-end is hefty and round so bass lovers should find it not missing authority with good texture for low-end beats, kick drums or acoustic upright bass. Non-bassheads will likely appreciate the centered vocal mid-ranges and fluent upper treble response for cymbals and electronica sounds. However, as typical of HiFiMAN's signature 'house sound', the HE-300 can be unforgiving of sibilant or bright recordings and will normally spotlight obvious flaws or limitations in poor source material. Quality headphone amping audibly improves the instrumental separation ["air"] and expands the soundstage depth of the HE-300 which is otherwise narrow in scope and spatiality. Luckily, mobile player/computer listeners can still use the HE-300 direct from iPod, iPad or smartphones without an amp with quite good musical results and plenty of volume. We think the HiFiMAN HE-300 occupies welcome 'white space' between upscale $1,000+ reference headphones and unsatisfying "starter audiophile" approaches.
The HiFiMAN HE-300 are completely open-back 'circumaural' ("around-the-ear") construction headphones with perfectly round earcups, so no isolation or noise-blocking ability. Earpad cushions are real leather and very comfortable without undue hot-spots even after hours of constant use. The HE-300 color scheme is a cool silver pewter that's attractive if perhaps a bit flashy and the black leather headband is padded and provides good wearing comfort and stability. Earcup grills and housings are made of durable molded plastic to minimize overall weight compared to other HiFiMAN headphones, and the HE-300 is indeed the lightest of all HiFiMAN cans. The provided detachable headphone cord is a high-end speaker cable cord built by Canares measuring approx 10ft -- good stuff!
