Applications:

The AKG K495NC noise-cancelling travel headphone enters an intensely competitive field of recently developed 'active' noise-attenuation technologies and superb sound quality performance by the likes of newcomers Polk and stalwart Audio-Technica headphones. The K495NC's quite awesome machined-metal looks brands it with a mature sense of European style not previously seen in this category, along with the expected tough-built durability to withstand the rigors of the road. The K495 NC tone is well-engineered for computer-based music and movie watching with the expected clarity of mids/highs and the same tightly wound bass response that AKG brings to their upper-tier audiophile models. The noise-cancelling circuitry is 'active' [battery-powered] and works principally to squash some of the lower-frequency sonic rumble heard in airline cabins or commuting on the train. However, it does not seem to focus all that well on higher-pitched speech or loud close talkers, so the wailing kid behind you might still penetrate your blissful headphone coccoon from time to time. As a major plus, the AKG K495NC still functions for audio even without batteries (or if the batteries go dead), something not always possible with some other NC headphones. Earpad coverage is deemed as "full-size" but larger-eared listeners may find the circumaural ear cushions resting gently on the outer earlobes, depending of course on your highly particular melon geometry. The K495NC fit remains quite comfortable in all cases due to the high-quality butter-soft earpad material, which also helps to provide some further insulation against ambient noise intrusion when worn tight to the head.

As indicated above, the AKG K495 NC features a uniquely attractive black-on-brushed metal look ensuring no one will mistake these for those ubiquitous, boring 'four-letter' noise-cancelling headphones worn by the unwashed audio sheeple on every dang flight; not to mention, the K495's clear sound quality will easily best almost any other NC headphone currently available! Although listed as a full-size circumaural design, the K495 earpads are actually a mid-sized dimension somewhere between 'on-ear' and 'around-the-ear' fit styles. The fully collapsible, folding headband design helps to make these headphones very easy to carry around inside your carry-on without fuss or muss compared to larger travel-oriented headphones. The AKG K495 NC headband construction is simply built and appears durable with good fit adjustment ability and plush padding all around. Charging of the headphone's internal battery is possible via either standard AC adapter or via USB from any computer. The AKG 2-year 'repair or replace' premium manufacturer's warranty stays free with your HeadRoom "authorized AKG dealer" purchase receipt.

Disappointing offering from AKG
Posted by buzz from Cincinnati, Oh on 2012-08-23

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Super comfortable, well made
Cons: Muddy, flat sound

Let me begin by saying that I am in general a huge fan of AKG/Harmon phones. These noise cancelling K495's though are a bitter disappointment. They do present evenly across the sound spectrum as you would expect of AKG's but instead of the resounding clarity, bright sound with ever so subtle warmth you've come to expect from AKG, these phones present flat, muddy tones that sound washed out and tired. I really don't know what went wrong in the design shop but these are not to the standard you expect from AKG.
