Ding! Ding! Ding! Folks, it sounds like we have a winner. The Polk UltraFocus 8000 NC headphones not only provides superior 'active' [battery-powered] noise-cancelling for airline, train and road travel but they also offer amongst the most musical sound of any NC headphone in the field. Did we mention the easy hands-free iPhone / iPad connectivity with all voice activation + remote track controls handily located on the right earcup? Or the amazingly ergonomic wearing comfort and block-of-oak durability exemplified by the UltraFocus 8000 beefy swiveling earpads, detachable cable, and tough but pliable carbon fiber headband? And its not just the great design and construction that has us all agog. Audiophile music lovers will hear truly remarkable bass response that's both tight and punchy along with very good, well-focused vocal midranges that simply stomp on most other NC models' typically recessed, hollow-sounding voice / vocal tonalities. So our HeadRoom headphone nerds who typically poo-poo noise-canceling cans have had to readjust their world view now that the Polk UltraFocus 8000 NC is at the top of the heap. Good on ya', Polk!

The Polk UltraFocus 8000 NC full-size headphones come in a stealthy, attractive all-black color that ensures you won't be mistaken for wearing those other "four letter" noise-canceling headphones. To our eyes, the UltraFocus 8000 cosmetics positively oozes audio engineering. Headband and earpad cushions are soft and sumptous. Earcups swivel on a thick but uber-lightweight carbon frame that looks seriously built to last. All Apple player 3-button track controls and the handy 'Push-to-Hear' conversation button is located on the right earcup. The left earcup contains the headphone battery; please note the NC feature is on at all times in the UltraFocus 8000 and the headphones will not work without batteries -- so bringing extra AAA batteries is a very good idea on long journeys. The included Polk slim-profile travel case tucks the headphones away into your carry-on for ease of transit. The detachable headphone cord is a very flexible, high-quality planar-type cable engineered exclusively for the UltraFocus 8000 by Polk for maximum sound quality performance and tangle-free operation. The cord measures 5ft in length and terminates to an angled 3.5mm (1/8") 'mini' jack. A full-size 1/4" stereo plug adapter is provided in the package. The 1-year manufacturer's warranty is serviced free by Polk Audio only with your 'official Polk authorized dealer' HeadRoom purchase receipt.

Feature rich, Monster rivals...
Posted by buzz from Cincinnati, Oh on 2012-08-23

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Deep bass, good styling, Phone controls
Cons: A bit large for the average travel bag

These phones are in a dead heat with the new Monster head phones and Dr. Dre Studios in my opinion. On features they win out over either. On sound they are all so similar that will probably come down to user preference on styling, and feel. All are quite wearable for extended periods though you will have to decide which feels "just right" to you. I personally think the new Monsters are more comfortable but absolutely love the Phone controls built in to the ear piece. I could see myself easily buying all three sets!

Excellent sound--for noise cancellers
Posted by Clearmind from American in Taiwan on 2012-07-03

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Rich, beguiling sound, moderate noise cancelling
Cons: Few, see review

I keep changing my view of these, so have to keep re-writing this. These are basically sweet-toned, very nicely balanced headphones with a rich, full-bodied sound. It seems to me that when a signal has to go through the extra on-board amp and noise-canceling circuitry of a headphone like this that ultimately some definition will be lost and some extra distortion introduced. That's probably the case here, but Polk's accomplishment is to have produced a headphone that sounds inviting despite this. As a result the emphasis here is less on definition and detail--although there's enough detail to make these worth listening to--but on sound that is balanced, rich, and weighty. Because the sound does have an excellent balance, with especially deep and strong bass, these make good all-rounders for all types of music. The look and feel and comfort of these is excellent too. As far as noise reduction, I do hear some reduction in continuous external noise like fans or motors, but not too much for loud voices or sudden sounds. I will be asking for a replacement since I had some trouble with the cable jack at the earcup that seemed to shift the balance to the right, but these are interesting headphones I would like to keep.
