Sennheiser HD 415
MSRP $54.95
With the huge upsurge in good mobile music sources like iPods, Mp3s, laptop computers, DiscMans, and toteable CD/DVD players, Sennheiser has been stepping up its roll-out of headphone models geared for delivering quality audio on the move or while hanging around the home & office. The HD-415 is an open-earcup headphone with a warm, thumpy sound perfect for boosting the un-punchy bass response of many portable sources. A bit recessed in the highs, sure, but still a valid choice for listeners who enjoy full bass response and want an ultra-lightweight, portable-use headphone that will play cleanly from any audio device without crushing the wallet. The mid-range is nicely present but just a bit flat-sounding, perhaps a bit of a quibble considering it's basically an entry-priced headphone. The dark blue earcup vents on the HD-415 earpiece's add some flash to the hip street-wise styling. The look-alike Sennheiser HD-435 model merely adds an in-line volume control to the cable and nifty plum-orange earpiece vents. More portables, more Sennheiser 'phones... Keep 'em coming!
The HD-415 's low 32-ohm impedance and decent sensitivity ratings make this an efficient headphone for powering directly from most audio players, but a dedicated portable headphone amp will definitely help make the HD-415 sound crisper and MUCH more dynamic while improving the overall musical detail resolution & soundstage image when used from iPods, Mp3 players, DiscMans, and PC/laptop computers. The single-sided, non-detachable headphone cable exits from the left earcup and is about 9.5 feet long. A cable winder is included to adjust cable length, a neat plus. The supra-aural, mid-sized earcups are foam-padded and covered in a soft fabric that feels comfortable on the ears. That same fabric is also used on the underside of the headband providing some nice extra padding. The sizing & fit adjustments are via a basic sliding headband mechanism that's simple to use and looks basically bombproof. The HD-415 headphone cable is terminated to a gold-plated 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug, but a full-size 1/4" adapter is also handily included in the package. Sennheiser's two-year product warranty remains standard with all their headphones.
