Sennheiser HD 580
MSRP $259.95
Amongst the first high-end 'audiophile' 300 Ohm headphones back in the day, the Sennheiser HD580 served as the basic template for the subsequent -- and better-sounding -- HD600 and HD650 Sennheiser headphone models. Employing similar headband framework and carbon fiber mesh bails, the HD580 has a very rich tonal presentation that can skew towards overly buttery with certain equally 'warm' recordings.
The Sennheiser HD580 is basically a similar headphone design as the upscale Sennheiser HD600 and HD650 models. And while the sonic detail difference with a $10,000 source might become fairly obvious, for general listening applications around the home & office with typical consumer-grade audio equipment, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference -- except when it hits your wallet! For the price, this venerable Sennheiser headphone truly can’t be beat for straight-forward, high-quality listening enjoyment. For home theater and computer-based applications in quiet listening environments, the smooth and articulate sound of these cans will bring out the best your gear has to offer. Their wide-open, vented earcup will definitely allow external sounds in easily so the HD580 is probably not a good headphone choice for really noisy listening environments where there exists a lot of ambient disturbance. If you want some MAJOR audiophile-grade listening bang-for-the-buck, you should complement these headphones with a HeadRoom Mobile, Micro, Desktop, Home or Max headphone amp and get sound equal to many "entry level" high-end audiophile stereo systems costing up to ten times as much. The HD580 headphones are simply a great performer and a serious candidate for newbie audiophiles and folks just looking for superb Sennheiser sound at a reasonable price.
Long regarded as one of the most comfortable open-backed headphones available, the Sennheiser HD580 sports plush velour-type material on the earpads with generously-sized and well-fitting ear cup ergonomics. The headband, bails, and ear cup colors are various subdued shades of dark grey-blue with a simple, clean matte finish. The headband padding is nicely designed to provide a comfortable and secure fit. The 9.5-foot headphone cable is a “Y” configuration with a good-quality 1/8" inch (3.5mm) headphone plug. A full-size 1/4" plug adapter is also included in the package. The HD580 headphone cable is very easily removeable and can be seriously upgraded with ultra high-end, super high-detail aftermarket Cardas Audio replacement cabling -- but that may perhaps be something of an over-expenditure on these particular headphones depending on the overall quality of the audio source(s) being used.
