Applications:
In-ear headphone technology has been advancing at a dizzying clip with nearly every audio maker zeroing in on the high-end audiophile market. A variable in achieving excellent in-ear sound quality is that the earpiece fit within your particular ears will highly impact the audio performance you'll hear. In their flagship IE-80 earphones, industry gentle giant Sennheiser has developed a unique tuning system that allows listeners to easily adjust the driver response for a truly personalized tone suited to your individual listening taste. A quick rotation of a tiny built-in screw in each IE-80 earpiece adjusts the bass response from smooth and very present to hugely booming basshead tones in a matter of seconds. It's a useful feature to compensate for the weak-kneed bass response of many portable / MP3 players or lower bitrate compressed digital audio files -- or if you just want to have your cranium rocked with spine-tingling bass extension. The IE-80 highs remain well-rendered supported by a detailed mid-range that synergizes smoothly with vocal music and well-produced recordings in any genre. We hear an improved sense of texture and 'air' around vocals and instruments in the IE-80 versus the previous IE-8 incarnation. However, the bass tone can get woolly and 'sub-woofer' murky on the max dial setting, so some judicious fine tuning is likely all that's needed for most 'non-basshead' listeners.
The fit ergonomics and materials construction of the Sennheiser IE-80 is as advanced as their audio engineering. The IE-80 improves the internal capsule design over its forebearer (the IE-8) by adding all-metal construction versus the IE8 plastic capsule, in the process improving the clarity of the mids + highs. The IE-80 earpiece housings are constructed with a very durable brushed metal finish and they can be further outfitted with detachable earloop hooks for better comfort and/or wearing security. The IE-80 package provides a great array of variously sized S/M/L black silicon eartips in both single and double-flange types. The earpieces handily quick-detach from the headphone cord for ease of cable interchange or replacement. The 4ft-long Sennheiser IE-80 earphone cable is very well-built, and properly shielded/insulated to minimize annoying cable noise microphonics; the cable terminates to right-angled 3.5mm (1/8") 'mini' plug jack. The provided earphone nozzle cleaning tool also doubles as tuning screwdriver perfectly sized for the IE-80 miniaturized screw. A handy shirt clip to alleviate headphone cable slack is also included. A strong 2-year Sennheiser manufacturer's warranty remains standard with all their headphone products when proof-purchased ONLY from Sennheiser-authorized dealers -- like HeadRoom since 1992!
