The PXC150 are the least expensive noise-canceling headphones from Germany's Sennheiser Electronics powerhouse. Their proprietary NoiseGard technology reduces ambient noise by 70% which would be really cool if it were across the entire frequency range. However, like most other 'NC' headphone designs, the noise-blocking actually works best on constant, low hum (like cabin noise on airplanes) and typically performs less well at attenuating inconsistent, higher-pitched sounds like street traffic, crying babies, yelling, visiting in-laws, etc. This makes the PXC 150 superb for minimizing the deafening white noise of plane, train, and auto commuting while still getting good clean audio detail resolution. The PXC 150's total external noise reduction within these lower frequency ranges (under 1,000Hz~1,500Hz) is somewhere in the neighborhood of minus -10dB to perhaps -15dB; pretty darn good for such a tiny headphone. The PXC 150 has a fairly lean overall tonal/timbral presentation but still retains very acceptable clarity -- although their bottom-end bass punch is only lightly present -- so these are ideal cans for DVD watching & for listening to books-on-tape or talk radio while minimizing the intrusion of the noisy outside world. For "serious" sound-quality audiophiles, the ECH option offers way superior audio performance and much better isolation to boot. But given their low price, these small portable-use 'Noise-Canceling' headphones will serve very well for travelers who don't want to break the piggy bank for quality NC-application cans.
A principal difference between the PXC150 and the upgraded PXC models lies in its much more basic, less-padded headband which does not have the ability to fold up like the Sennheiser PXC 300 model. The PXC 150 is also significantly smaller versus the big full-size design of the flagship Sennheiser PXC 450 noise-canceling headset. The closed supra-aural earcups are quite small and covered in pleather-type padding material similar to the PXC300. They feel very light and comfortable on the head and the noise canceling feature can be turned on & off by a flick of a lighted control switch powered by two AAA batteries. The "Y" cord is terminated to a mini-plug and has a sliding adjustor to snug up the cable. The package comes with two different adapters including a full-size 1/4" stereo jack and the essential 1/8" (3.5mm) double-pronged airplane adapter. A handy carrying/travel/storage pouch is also supplied in the package. A strong Sennheiser 2-year product warranty remains standard.
