Sennheiser PXC 300

MSRP $179.95
This product is no longer available at HeadRoom.

Based on the very compact PX series, the Sennheiser PXC300 is a small, closed earpad design noise cancelling headphone. The noise cancelling feature is surprisingly effective given the small size of the product, and provides good reduction in outside noise. Fit and finish are excellent and the headphones fold up sort of like sunglasses and fit into a very compact carry case. Also included are 1/8" to 1/4" and airline adaptors.

The top 'supraural-size' Sennheiser noise-cancelling headphone is the PXC-300, which offers a claimed 80% reduction of ambient noise and mildly better sonics than the lower price point PXCs. The upscale noise-cancelling electronics on the PXC-300 sports better rejection of stray mobile cell phone interference as well as a stated 10% improvement on external sound attenuation compared to the PXC 150/250 models. The noise-cancelling effect works pretty good at blocking out the in-cabin jet engine roar as you fly the friendly skies but is less effective at attenuating inconsistent higher-pitched sounds like loud speech, crying babies, barking dogs, or annoying in-laws. The overall sound quality, frankly, is not all that much better than the other PXC models with perhaps a hair more fullness in the bass response, but it still retains a similar weak-kneed thinness throughout the entire frequency range typical for "active" noise-cancelling headsets. For serious audiophile-types with demanding listening tastes, an ear canal headphone remains the choice for top-shelf sound combined with nearly-total isolation.

The PXC-300 headphones are VERY lightweight and rest nice n' easy on the head. They have a well-padded and easily foldable headband sporting a nifty two-point susupension system that makes getting a personalized, comfortable fit a breeze. The closed/sealed supra-aural earcups are fairly small and covered in a cushy leather-type material that feels softer and has better passive attenuation characteristics than the other PXCs. The 'active' noise-cancelling circuitry can be turned on and off by a flick of a lighted control switch which is powered by two AAA batteries. The PXC-300 headphone's "Y" cord is terminated to a 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug and has a sliding adjustor on it to snug up the cable slack. The package comes with two different adapters, including a full-size 1/4" stereo jack and the crucial 1/8" (3.5mm) double-pronged airplane adapter for plugging into the built-in airline sound system. A totally sweet, soft-sided protective carrying case with a belt hook is also supplied and they even throw in a pair of batteries for your troubles along with an extended 2-year warranty….Thanks, Sennheiser!

Not bad but I prefer noise isolation
Posted by VinnieVidi from NYC on 2010-01-29

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Clear mids, effective noise canceling
Cons: Compressed soundstage

For noise canceling headphones the 300's are not bad, although I am sure that there are more advanced models out there now. The 300s can work without turning on the noise canceling but the sound is thin and unappealing. When the noise canceling is on the sound seems narrow and compressed. On the plus side, the mids are clear which makes the 300 very good for TV and movie watching.

I would recommend these if you are looking for a inexpensive noise canceling headphone. For me, I prefer isolating IEMs.

OK
Posted by WillDaddy from Seattle on 2010-01-16

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Good sound
Cons: Doesn't isolate like an IEM

While I give the PX 100's a "5" for their value, these are only OK being advertised as noise-blocking at three times the price. My spouse is very uncomfortable with inserting IEM's into her ears, so chose these as an alternative for air travel. I have to wonder if a full-sized sealed model like the Sennheiser HD280 Pro might do just as good a job. If you're at the back of the plane, these headphones will not shield you from jet noise.

Good headphone for the job however if you want Good SQ there are better options out there
Posted by IRONSNAKEMX from LAREDO, TX on 2010-01-14

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Nice NC Effect and good sound (with Cancellation on ) Folds up for easy storage
Cons: Sound Suffers a lot when NC is off, battery Compartment is huge

These headphones offer good sound quality when the NC is turned on ,, however , when you turn it off the Sound suffers aa lot , and also the battery compartment is very big so its not suited for portable use , but i do give points for the ability to use the headphones when you have no batteries because Bose headphones do not offer this feature and neither do the Dr DRE headphones, Cancellation works very good for the Bus i calculate that it drops the outside noice for about 60 %

Overall the headphones get a 8.3 in my book
