These custom ear canal headphones are super-smooth, though they may be faulted for perhaps just a bit too much bass, and (maybe) for being a bit too rolled-off in the highs. But the overall sound is well-connected and tight from bottom to top, the dynamics are terrific, and the highs are beautifully articulate and transparent. If it weren’t for the fact that the twice as expensive UE-10 and UE-11 got it so incredibly knock-your-sox-off perfect, the UE-5 might have received our 'best-in-class' recommendation. We like these headphones a lot, and we think they are useful for the serious audiophile listener/traveler who needs to regularly shut out the world and get peaceful, great listening with far, far better isolation performance than even "active" noise-canceling headphones could ever deliver.
These custom-molded earphones are literally one of a kind. You MUST go to your local audiologist to begin the process and have deep, full in-ear impressions made; and then send them off directly to Ultimate Ears in Irvine California for final manufacturing. Once Ultimate Ears has your impressions, they build molds, and then cast in the crossover network and dual drivers of this amazing headphone. Add four feet of premium flexible cabling and a 90-degree angle mini-plug and you’ve got a minimum 20dB of isolation (more than twice as good as noise cancellers), and the clearest, best detailed and most articulate audio reproduction you’ve ever heard from drivers this impossibly tiny!
