Ultrasone has done a good job of producing a well-balanced pair of sealed/closed headphones at a reasonable price with the HFI-550 model. Though certainly not as smooth or refined as the top-performing (and more expensive!) sealed-earcup headphones out there, these Ultrasones have a job to do and definitely hold their own amongst sealed cans in the category at this pricepoint. Their overall musical presentation is acceptably clear and punchy with mildly recessed mid-ranges and somewhat veiled or rolled-off upper highs on the top end, an almost 'signature sound' for much of the Ultrasone line of headphones. The bass response may perhaps be slightly over-emphasized, but certainly not to overt distraction and it may even be considered a good thing for bass-lovin' listeners wanting to pump out a clubby bottom-end. The earcup ambient seal against external noise is strong, making them excellent headphones for analytical listening in noisy environments like a sweat-soaked dance party or a hectic college dorm.
These full-sized, sealed-back cans are an all-plastic headband construction that allow the ear pieces to either swivel flat for storage in a narrow space (like in your LP case), or tuck up into the space inside the headband to make a tidy lump. And the folding/swiveling earpad design make it a favorite among professional DJs for mono mixing with one ear while on the fly. The earpads are cushioned with foam padding covered in a durable quality soft pleather. The single-sided headphone cord exits from the left earpiece and is terminated 10 feet later with a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug. Also included in the packaging box is a useful screw-on 1/8" to 1/4" inch adaptor.
