Makes a Difference Even if You Don't Need Amplification

Posted by moses667 from Washington, DC on 2012-10-24
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros:
Cons:

I purchased the Total Airhead honestly because I was curious to hear what difference it might make on my ATH-M50s with a MacBook Pro using 256kb mp3s. The M50s work quite well straight out of my computer. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a noticeable increase in detail and quickness with the amp. Tightness in the bass was improved and there's better instrument separation. Don't get me wrong, these differences are subtle, but do create a sound that is just enough more fun, more musical and detailed that I don't want to listen without the amp anymore.

If (all other factors being equal) I was making a choice between a better, but more expensive pair of headphones and a cheaper pair and an amp, I'd get the best cans I could. But I'd want to eventually get an amp to get the most out of them.

Must have for portable MP3

Pros: Quality, price and sound enhancement
Cons: None and I mean none

I won't waste your time with rehashing the other reviews. If you want a portable, high quality, headphone amp there just isn't any other. I run a $50 Sansa Fuze with a pair of Senni px200s and this amp: it's portable audio heaven. I bought my TAH about three years ago, still going strong and musically wonderful. One thing, do buy yourself the AC power adaptor, you will sooner or later. Now for something the HeadRoom folks will hate, I use my TAH on a laptop also. I can only say that I enjoy the hell out of it and what it does for laptop sound is amazing. Sorry HeadRoom guys, you just build too superior of a product, maybe a TBH for Christmas next year?

Mono mod to Total AirHead

Posted by DBX from New Orleans, LA on 2011-12-28
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Best way to get true mono
Cons: Not switchable back to stereo

This review is for the HeadRoom factory modification to the Total AirHead ("TAH") that permanently changes the amp from stereo to mono. Sonically, I give the TAH mod five stars because it is the best way I know to get true mono from stereo sources like iPods. I'm deaf in one ear, so I need mono, and simply combining L+R in an adapter worries me. I use my TAH as both a headphone amp and as a preamp between my iPod and the input jack on my car stereo. I give the mod four stars overall, because the mono mode is not switchable. This is not a surprise--the guys at HeadRoom told me it was not switchable, so I'm not complaining. But it would be perfect if the mono mode was switchable. I also have trouble reading the labels embossed on the rubber. Great product at affordable price.

Pretty good, but loose wires (UPDATE)

Posted by BassHead Man from Chicago on 2011-05-04
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Makes high impedance headphones sound great
Cons: Loose connection wires and noise

Well, first of all, there is a switch inside for low and high power. At first, with the power of suggestive thinking, I assumed the sound was being amplified. But, after listening awhile, I realized the sound was no louder than without the amp. So, I read the manual and DUH, found that there's a low/high power switch. After switching to high power... WOW, OK, that's what I was expecting.

After awhile, though, the connection wires started getting loose and I had to keep fiddling with them to get them to totally connect. It almost seemed like the female connection in the amp was too big for the wires. I bought new ones, but eventually found that some connection wires I had gotten already through another purchase fit the best, but still not snug.

Also, I started getting interference and a buzzing noise. Not sure if this was from the loose wires, or because I ride the commuter train and there's something on board the train interfering. It was annoying enough, that I eventually stopped using the amp and now only used low impedance headphones (I have a Sony Walkman and a 3rd generation iPod).

It's been several months since using the amp, and I'm exploring going back to it and trying to figure out the problems again, or get another amp.

But, if not for the problems above, I can say it makes the sound more full and effortless with all of the headphones I own (about 6 pair, including a higher impedance Denon).

UPDATE 2011-11-26
I got the amp back out and decided to cycle through my headphones again (needed a change of pace from my Sony Xtra Bass; XB500's and XB700's, which don't need a headphone amp at all and if you're a bass-head like me, might be all you need).

Now that they sell those mini-to-mini cables to be used for the newer car stereos, I decided to try and buy a quality-looking Griffin one. It seems to fit more snugly into the jacks and I haven't heard the interference buzzing so far (after several sessions) on the train.

I upped the star rating from 3 to 4. If the unit would have come with a better mini-to-mini wire, it would have started out with a better rating.

I'm very happy the the sound and quality of the TAH amplifier

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Small, lightweight and disposable battery powered
Cons: Wish there was a battery indicator

I bought this amplifier to drive my new Yuin PK1 headphones. It works very well and sound very clean. The build quality is great. I bought it with the Gigabag package. The Gigabag is fine except I wish it had some sort of belt loop, I'm not one for shoulder straps. I love the fact that the amplifier uses disposable batteries instead of rechargables. I hate running out of juice in the middle of a trip. With the AAA batteries it easy to replenish the power and go. The overall battery life is good but it's a bit difficult to tell when the batteries are reaching the end of life. My MP3 player is also powered by AAA batteries and I'm very happy with the overall results of my econo-stereo package. For less that $400 I was able to buy an MP3 player, amplifier, headphones and a bag that makes for a great sounding portable stereo system. Highly Recommended.

Wonderful Product!!!

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great Sound, Small, Long Battery Life
Cons: None That I Can Think Of

Let me start out by saying that I am new to the whole audiophile world. I stumbled upon HeadRoom's website while searching for better headphones than the basic earbuds that came with my iPod. I was totally taken aback by the sheer volume of headphones, amps and everything else HeadRoom has to offer! It was like finding a world you didn't even know existed! After a lot of research I acquired a pair of Sennheiser HD448's and was blown away!! I had no idea my iPod could sound so amazing and I didn't think it could possibly sound any better. Boy, was I wrong.

I bought the Total Airhead and was once again blown out of the water! Everything sounds so much better with the Airhead. The crossfeed feature is incredible, and I found that I can listen to music much longer without getting that headache from using headphones too long. The soundstage is great and something I hadn't anticipated would sound so good or even possible with headphones! It is such an improvement that I'm listening to all my music over again because it's like hearing each song for the first time. It is totally worth spending $100 if you want an unbelievable musical experience! The Airhead is compact, durable, and I've found that the battery life is pretty long (just don't forget to turn it off when you're done!)

Thank you HeadRoom for completely changing the way I listen to music. I had no idea how great the quality of music could be from an iPod. What else can I say, this amp is AMAZING!!!!

Pros: Inexpensive, great sound, small package
Cons: none

I bought this amp after listening to the bigger Micro Amp from Headroom. Very close to the same quality of sound but in a smaller package. I love my amp. I take it and my ipod everywhere. I am currently listening to a pair of Bose Triport headphones and as soon as I plugged this amp in I could tell a big difference. If you are looking for an amp that is portable and don't want to spend a lot of money, this is it.

On the Fence

Posted by easyup81 from Chicago (Boystown), IL on 2010-03-20
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: First Amp Ever - 100 bucks seemed OK
Cons: Is it worth $100? It depends

I purchased the 'Airhead' at the same time as the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's to make up for the loss in volume (with 64 ohm impedance) compared to my existing Koss UR-20's (wthh 32 ohm impedance). They accomplished that mission. What does that mean exactly? Well, the HD 280s and UR-20s are different animals. The HD 280s are quiet and tight, the UR-20's are loud and flabby (but still good). The airhead actually even's the playing field a bit. Frankly it's a bit of a judgement call. If you're powering a pair of decent headphones WITH AN IPOD, you really should get an amp. Having said that, I usually use my ipod's stock earbuds. At home; however, I use the airhead and the big boy headphones need the boost when used via my PC. But, when I connect either to an (old) receiver I really don't need the 'Airhead' for volume. The receiver has plenty of power needed to drive the (tiny) speakers in the full-ear head phones. So....I usually keep the 'air head' delegated to my PC. Is that worth $100? After 1 year I'm frankly still on the fence. I certainly DO NOT need the 'air head' to power EITHER headphone via a receiver. Via ipod? It may be handy but compared to an ipod the 'airhead' is @#$@ huge. I like the flexibility to move the 'airhead' where I need (want) it.

Cleaner sound? That is really subjective. In other words: I have no idea. Yes, it pumps up the volume a few dB which *IS* significant (a good 5-7 dB) but the added distortion may be overwhelmining. Will more investment in a higher powered amp result in better sound? Probably. But what is it worth to you. I say, work your way up.

(NEW 11/APRIL/2010) Although Headroom has indicated the AirHead is NOT designed for use with a PC, it is actually flexible (and small ) enough to b used with a 7-year old Sound Blaster 5.1 soundcard (barf!) to bypass the speakers. It amplifies EVERYTHING (for good and bad). I didn't plan on using it with my PC, but it gives enough if all you need is blissful loudness. Is it worth $100 in a situation FOR WHICH IT WAS NOT DESIGNED? Yes. It's worth exactly that amount. (FOUR STARS 11/APRIL) Like the experts say, if you're a a PC only user browse the (pricy) DAC amps--for an extra $250 Ouch.! This one is all purpose, baby! For alot of people, going from the $100 Airhead to $350 the DAC version is a deal. My advise, call them and ask--be honest how much you can spend & stick with it.

In the end I would recommend this to inexperienced amp/headhphone users willing to spend (and sacrifice) the cash. Otherwise, stick with your solo UR-20's and enjoy the (cheap) (boomy) blissful sound (noise).

BONUS:
Since an amp isn't normally something you will be handling often, I don't think this should influence you (much), but I have to comment on the build feel of this mini-amp. Nowadays good build feel for any electronic device is typically decided by a bean counter (team) and focus groups to hack out what might be the least amount of material that can be used to extract the most dollars from MISS (or MRS) consumer. Headroom must have kicked out the bean counters when designing the cover to the 'airhead.' A NICE BIG CHUNK OF FLEXIBLE RUBBER (yum) that fits the plastic body with the expected force and moves 'deliberately'when forced. It tops the cicruit board and can be totally removed from the body. Why? To expose the single switch to boost the amp's signal. No, it doesn't *SEEM* to make sense, but I love it damn it. This thing exudes quality if not practicality. Only you can decide. Ask about their return policy and give it a go. It's only money. Yours.

HeadRoom Response:

This customer has provided good insight to the product-- however HeadRoom does not recommend using the AirHead with a computer.  It will work, and will amplify the signal as the user has stated, but it will also amplify the distortion out of the computer.  For high fidelity listening, the headphone jack should never be used; instead connect a USB DAC to your computer.  A BitHead amp is exactly like an AirHead but with the addition of a USB DAC for us directly with computers.  Using the DAC in the BitHead would significantly improve his listening experience.

Not really worth it

Posted by Max from CA on 2010-03-01

Recommend Product: No
Pros: None
Cons: 100 bucks to get the same sound you get without it.

Quite frankly, it sounds like a lot of the reviews must come from headroom employees, because the truth is I barely appreciate the difference. I'm using a classic Ipod last generation and two hi-quality Klipsch and also Shure hi-end earphones. The only thing you can notice is a slight accent on the bass tone and a general compressor effect in the overall signal. If anything, the amp dulls the sound a bit. Other than that, you can just get a higher volume, yes, but I see none of the "clarity" or wonderful qualities other reviewers are raving about. I find this quite puzzling. I also tried this on a sennheiser hd800, the best earphone in the world to my knowledge, and in that case there's a clear downgrading in sound quality. I would suggest that before you spend a hundred bucks or more on this product, you try it first and don't buy it blindy based on the hype posted on this webpage. Judge for yourself and decide if the barely noticeable difference in sound is worth that money. The way I see it you're better off investing those 100 dollars towards the purchase of better earphones.

HeadRoom Response:

All of the reviews posted about this product and all other products on headphone.com are 100% written by our customers and absolutely NOT written by HeadRoom employees, which would be completely unethical.  For HeadRoom's personal review on products, visit the 'What We Think' Tab.

HeadRoom strives for a high level of satisfaction for all customers, so we hope this customer contacts us to troubleshoot the problem and identify the weakness in the listener's audio chain. The source was not mentioned which could greatly affect the user's listening experience; for example plugging the amp directly into the headphone jack of a computer (for computer listening a BitHead Amp via USB is always a better choice). A faulty cable or possibly even a defective amp could also be to blame.  Please call us for personalized troubleshooting and assistance!

Blown Away by this product

Pros: Reveals amazing sound, great build quality
Cons: hmm....None?

This is an amazing product! This connected to my iPhone reveals so much more sound than I thought possible. I normally use a Fiio E5, and I thought that was good. After trying this out, there is nothing left in music to uncover.

Besides the great audio quality this delivers, the battery life was superb! This lasts for an extremely long time. I initially thought that I would be changing batteries like diapers, but seriously - I was pleasantly surprised at how long I could listen to this for before needing to switch.

My highlights with it were my Shure240's which had the bass open up very well through this amp. Also my Monster Beats Studio - sounded much clearer through this.

For this price I don't think there is an amp out there that can beat it. I definitely would recommend this.

Pros: long battery life, great quality, small, easy to use
Cons: none

I use my mp3 player mostly for very long cross Atlantic flights (20 hours). The Total AirHead has been an absolute delight with every set of headphones I use it with, including the Grad SR-80 and a pair Denon noise canceling headphones. I have also connected it directly to the airplane sound system using the icluded interconnect, and enjoy clearer sounding flight movies and music.

I think the TotalAirHead is a wonderful value for the money and I fully recommend it.

Great first amp

Posted by Nacozari from Wisconsin on 2010-02-10
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Good price, extremely well-built
Cons: Sonically, doesn't distinguish itself too much from the crowd of small, cheap portable amps

I bought the Airhead back in 2004, as my first portable headphone amp. I've long since moved on to other amps, but the one I bought (and its successor, a Bithead I purchased in 2006) are still getting use by friends to whom I bequeathed them.

In terms of sound quality and power output, there's not much to distinguish the AirHead from a slew of other portable amps out there in a similar price range. It's good, but not stellar. It's also a bit bulky, as far as portable amps go; but this is both its defect and virtue, as it's built as solid as a tank, and can be mistreated with impunity and suffer no ill effects (believe me, I know).

I'd recommend this as a good starter amp, or for someone who needs a portable setup that can take a beating and last for years.

This is my first amp I've ever bought, having just bought my Grados SR-325i moving up from a pair of Shure E4c and Grados SR-80i was a treat, adding this and the sendstation dock only made it all the better. Bass is finally apparent and has body, soundstage is outstanding, the crossfeed helps bring depth to the music. A definite purchase.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: small and compact, powerfull sound,a lot of functions
Cons: can't think of

I gave this one 5 stars like all the rest of the headroom gear i own.
when I was a fresh starter (noob) on the whole HI-FI thing I didn't even think that certain headphones can sound really great and other not so.
headphone amp?? "what is this foolishness"..I thought to mylsef. "I will never spend my precious money on this...this is not speakers,it is only headphones and they do not need an amp!"
boy! I was ssssooo wrong. one day, when reading the reviews on headroom site over and over again,I couldn't help myself and decided to get me a total airhead just to see what all this fussing about. I remember the first time I was hooking my new airhead to my PK1 earphones...and I was really impressed by the improvement in sound, it was night and day difference. anyway, this is how I got hooked into headphones and I bought a few more headphones and headphone amps since than.
although I got another, more upscale amps now, I still think the total airhead can give a fair fight to a lot of full size amps out there, and for
redicioulus price for such a great audio device.

it is small, compact, and delivering powerfull and smooth sound.
it is also got a lot of very important functions like: crossfeed,high/low gain, clipping indicator.
it is also very durable and well built (like all headroom stuff), it can work on batteries and electricity (with the supplied wall wart). headroom even got a special little bags for the airhead for carring it around when traveling.
talking about sound, when comparing it to my other desktop amps it comes very close. even driving my rather demanding (300 ohm) HD650 nicely.
very recommendable little unit. really a luxury for a portable unit, and can be used for home also. this is a great amp to start with if you are a little short with cash (like i did) and don't sure if you want to shell out all the way for a more serious amp.

Thanks a lot you bastards.

Curious, I asked for and received your AirHead amp for Christmas; to be used with Etymotics' 4Ps and an iTouch. I was thoroughly happy with the Ety's, and doubted there'd be a marked improvement with the AirHead. I was content with the portability, with the quality of the sound, and okay, yes, I was a little smug for being so clever. I planned to use the AirHead at home chiefly, and most of the time would go AirHead-less. This was my plan.

The AirHead put an end to that. The improvement in sound was stunning. The scales fell from my eyes and, in a very literal way, the angels sang. The added dimension in both the higher and lower registers is palpable; bass has punch without being intrusive, voices seem sweeter in certain recordings than I remember, and there is a presence that wasn't there before (is this soundstage?). It was like going from over-the-ear headphones (Sony 7506s) to the Etys. So much sound from so little equipment, and equipment so little.

So now what? Am I going to lug around the Airhead and attendant wires (I also received the SendStation Line-out Mini USB to take advantage of the better fidelity from the iTouch's synch port) and buy batteries for the bugger?

Oh yes.

I am.

The slight compromise to portability is easily trumped by the improvement in the quality of the sound.

So, thanks a lot you bastards. Really, thanks a lot. The AirHead is the best thing to happen to my listening experience since sliced bread (well, you know what I mean).

This is a very nice and reasonably priced headphone amp. I was seriously considering building my own with one of the DIY amps out there, but even though I have soldering skills, the work necessary to build and test it would go beyond the price of the Airhead. Much lower risk too as this one is backed by Headroom! I chose the Airhead of the Bithead because I don't need a USB.

Total AirHead Review

Posted by VinnieVidi from NYC on 2010-01-17
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Clean Sound, Solid Construction
Cons: Short Battery Life

I purchased the Total AirHead as an amp to go along with my travel set-up: a MacBook Pro, Pro-Ject DAC, and Sennheiser IE7. The sound from the TAH is noticeably better than when I plug straight into the MBP's headphone jack. By better I mean that the highs are not as harsh and the usual background hissing is no longer a problem.

My only gripes with the Total AirHead are as follows. First, it runs on 4 AAA batteries that don't seem to last a very long time. I would imagine that it would have been more economical just to buy both the US and EU wall plugs. The second thing is the cross-feed feature -- I really don't know if it is working or not. Maybe it is and the problem is with me and not the amp... I don't know.

All in all, it's a great portable amp and a pretty good value. It's light, solid and is capable of a more refined sound than many of the other portable amps I've tried in the past.

I am using this when listening to my iPod. The sound improvement was not that noticeble on the standard earbuds. More noticible on my Untimate Ears in ear phones. But the sound difference when using my Sennheiser HD 565 Ovations was amazing. The iPod could not drive the Senns at a good volume. The Total AirHead really improved the volume and especially the bass. With gain setting on low I get all the performance needed to make the phones and music sound great. Just a hugh improvement. If you use full size cans to listen to your iPod you should try this amp.

Really found what headroom said was true...adding an amp to the senn 555's really made them come alive. Makes me wonder what a higher end can with better amp would sound like!

Rounds Out Live Tunes

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Softens the bass without muddying sound
Cons: Short Battery Life

Received as a xmas present and was weary as to what it would bring to my already pricey earbuds, but boy was I pleasantly surprised. I listen to a lot of live audience recordings that can vary in quality. This amp finds a way to level peaks and valleys out and create a balanced sound. I love the volume control on the amp versus the portable device I'm plugging it into. Great value.

The Cunning Agent for Effectively Recording Music

Posted by ampulse from Pittsburgh, PA on 2010-01-15
Posted on HeadRoom Total AirHead

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: very portable, easy setup
Cons:

This little guy makes recording music more thorough. Why? In a live concert, there are numerous issues a recordist faces, mainly lots and lost of noise interference. This noise makes for a difficult time hearing the incoming levels. If you can't accurately hear what is being recorded, the music won't jive well in the post-production process. However, The Total Airhead amplifies the incoming sound signal and helps the recordist hear the levels with higher clarity. More clarity = better recording (assuming the recordist knows what he/she is doing). Enough Said.

Works great on low gain

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Excellent sound and portability
Cons: Picks up alot of interference from iphone

This amp works great on portable players/ laptops that don't have the juice to power higher ohms..

High gain using the optional power adapter seems to introduce quite a bit of noise.
It's rather difficult to use the airhead with an iPhone. It picks up noise from the cell even if the iPhone is switched to airplane mode wifi off Bluetooth off etc..once again the noise is not so prominant on the low gain setting..

This is a great introduction to headphone amps and it intrigues me as to what else headroom has to offer..

Tested on a MacBook pro and iPhone with beyer dynamic dt770 pros grado sr80s and ultrasone hfi 450s

Excellent first amp!

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Sound quality, crossfeed, construction, value
Cons: Input and output jacks not on same side, loose volume wheel

This is my first real headphone amplifier. The dark, all-plastic construction is solid and durable. Sound quality is excellent, improvements are clear and apparent. The sound stage is wider, with more bass detail and impact, and more detailed, airy highs. The crossfeed switch gives subtle improvements to the sound stage, but it cures my headache problem. However, the input and output jacks are not on the same side which limits its versatility. The volume wheel is loose and is easily moved, resulting in some sudden volume changes. Overall an excellent amp as your first, but needs some minor improvements.

A must have w/headphones and i pod

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: great price
Cons: Looks

This product changed my life. I purchased this with a pair of ATH-ESW9A Headphones and I have a great sounding portable system for my i pod. The only problem with i pods are the sound. With a Total Bite Head or Air Head you can change your life to. I recomened this for any one that uses a i pod. Sound Quality is where it is at and a i pod by its self can't run what you need to here quality. Wake Up America and by a AMP for your i pod. NOW!!
