Pure Class
Posted by Tech_Life from Dallas on 2013-04-17Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Warm neutral signature, spacious soundstage, comfort
Cons: just wish it had more metal in them and not plastic
The HD600 is one of the first pair of good headphones I've ever bought as I was all about IEM's and had some really nice ones like the SM3, BA200, e-Q5 and others. Nothing imo can compare to the open spacious sound of open-back HP's like the HD600 and the detail is almost just as good as the balanced armature IEM's I had.
I lover the warm neutral signature of the HD600 with its smooth highs that still sound crisp, warm lush mids and clean natural bass response. The soundstage is spacious and cohesive and they have good 3D imaging with good separation though I've heard IEM's that do imaging just a bit better but the HD600 isn't bad at all.
All in all I'm loving the Sennhesier HD600 and now has me wanting to see how the HD650 sounds and if its worth getting but I'll jusy addition them first. If your looking for a balanced headphones with nice detailed neutral signature the HD600 is a fantastic choice imo.

Outstanding neutrality, reference level headphones
Posted by SupersonicHD from NY on 2012-12-27Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Neutrality; amazing with all kinds of music, remarkable clarity, very comfortable pads
Cons: Laidback, "polite", somewhat "veiled", stock cable sounds dull, NEEDS headphone amp
The Sennheiser HD 600s have been my reference headphones for nearly 8 years. I still prefer their engaging, clear, focused, and slightly mellowed sound when paired with my modified Musical Fidelity X-Can V3 tube amp and Moon Audio Black Dragon headphone cable over my Grado PS500 at times. The HD 600s have a more lively musical presentation, dynamics, and instrumental separation if driven with a high quality amp (preferably tubed). You need the cable upgrade to flatten out the impedance spike that most Sennheisers have which will afford better tonal response, clarity, and to further improve the soundstage. These headphones are capable of true reference grade sound with a highly resolving digital source (CD player/DAC). But they are not meant for portable use due their high impedance and bulky size.

I like this better than the HD650
Posted by Headophile from Northern Caledonia on 2011-02-05Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable, comfortable, comfortable
Cons:
I have had this pair for 15 years. It is my favorite headphone. It fits my head from long listening sessions. The HD650 just does not fit me as well. It could be I have not worn it as much. I have thought that a new set of 600's might give me the same problem. But I wont find out until this one breaks.
The 600 sounds very smooth and neutral to me. The 650 seems to have deeper bass and the same smooth middrange and treble. But I get more easily fatigued with the 650 (from the fit, I think). I keep going back to the 600's.
I use it with either the Headroom Cosmic or NuForce Icon2.

For head speakers a BIG YES

Pros: Very comfortable for long periods and killer sound will reward you
Cons: Zero
I have had this baby playing non stop since a got them 6 months ago. On first listen they sound lost and confused. After proper break in period they come to life with body and soul.I leave them playing all the time,so they are also ready to go whenever I want.
Music is played with great timing "PRAT" with this cans on your noggin. For the money the HD-600 are a down right bargain for any serious music lover out there. I love them and will never part with them. HD-800 must be SCARY.

Outstanding Cans
Posted by Mullard EL34 from Midwest US on 2010-09-13Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Superbly neutral frequency balance, especially when driven balanced
Cons: None
The Sennheiser HD600 is simply amazing and becomes truly awesome when driven via balanced drive signals! Be advised that these "cans" take a LONG time to break-in (I had over 200 hours of solid Steve Winwood pounding the Sennheisers before they really began to show their true nature; at around 400 hours of continuous, high-level operation, the HD600's finally stopped improving). The high-frequency response is simply electrostatic in its clarity and smoothness and the low-frequency response is like having laser-quick subwoofers attached to your head!

Better Than HD650s
Posted by milleman from burlington,vt on 2010-07-18Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: true neutral freq balance, no weak points
Cons: supplied cable terrible, needs a great amp
I've been a headphone nut for 40 years but not at the head-fi.org level where a lot more has been written about the HD600s. An $1800 Headroom headphone amp and an Equinox cable make these sound their best.
I spent many hours several times trying to discern if the HD650s are any better, the answer is no. The 650s have an intentionally different frequency balance that gives more low bass at the expense of a boomy mid-bass and a recessed midrange that loses all the snap crackle and pop of real music in the presence region. This may work well with inexpensive amps and bass-head, but with a good front end the HD600s are the more accurate without giving up any other qualities to the 650s.
I've had mine for a decade now and feel they give overall more balanced performance than Grado 325i, AKG K701, Beyer-Dynamic DT880, HD650, Stax SR4, and any others I can't remember right now. I haven't directly compared the latest crop of $1000+ headphones, but the HD800s sounded like a notable step up, even discounting the wide soundstage tricks.
As has been said about the 650s, other headphones may excel in a couple areas, but the HD600 remains nearly perfectly balanced and seamless in all elements of sonics and make for a relaxed listen for the long-term (10 hours or 10 years). And with a good cord and amp, present a more neutral frequency balance than the 650s.

HD 600
Posted by pocketchange from Texas on 2010-05-29Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: No
Pros: Eveything anyone with a head needs in headphones
Cons: NONE
Having enjoyed these cans for years and listened to the newer examples as they enter the headphone arena, I remain hard pressed to get a different pair.
I listen to my HD 600's through a Sonic Frontiers Line3 or a Sunfire PreAmp (in summer). Both do an excellent job getting whatever source I've decided to
listen to up to speed (SFCD1, TD124, Tascam 42B or 44B or Mc MR 77).
Other sources are available in my collection but I stick to the two because they simply do the best job of allowing the HD 600's to do their thing.
To date; I have yet to listen to a better sounding, more comfortable set of cans.
Also consider: replacement parts availability or better cables (if you care to try them).

I Like Them!
Posted by Homeros8000 from San Jose, CA on 2010-05-02Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great Value, Good Bass, Comfortable
Cons: Non
These headphones will certainly satisfy most listeners, they can handle most types of recordings. I run them with Headroom Ultra Micro DAC and an OTL Tube Amp and the sound is amazing! Warm, large and intimate and deeply involving! I highly recommend those HP for fun listening, but for ultra detail, airiness and expansive sound stage I highly recommend the AKG K701/2.

Awesome Headphone
Posted by ctmurphy from Minnesota on 2010-04-11Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Laid back but detailed presentation
Cons: Lack of slam and dynamics
I used the HD-600s with an older Headroom Supreme and the sound is great. I mostly play Apple Lossless files on a 5th Generation iPod (with Wolfson DAC) through a pocket dock line-out and Kimber mini to RCA cable.
When I've let other people listen they go nuts about it but I wish there was a little more dynamics and slam to the combination. I tried a Headroom Cosmic briefly when it was sent to me by mistake and loved it. I'm getting my amp upgraded and that may make the difference I'm looking for. Soooo, long story short these are great headphones, more revealing than the HD-580s that I also own, I can listen to them for hours and hours, no fatigue, and any limitations may be due to the amp I'm using.

Sennheiser finesse at it's most classic
Posted by Radiola from New York on 2010-02-20Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: articulate and accurate
Cons: need lots of amp power
I can hear things on these phones that I haven't heard on any other transducer in my experience. I can understand vocals in music that are muddied and obscured when heard through other devices. These cans have finesse, but somewhat "courteous" in comparison to other phones, including Sennheiser's own HD595.
I should add that Sennheiser with it's liberal replacement parts policy allows a strange upgrade to near HD600 status for any of it's 500 series......For the sake of simplicity they only manufactor one replacement speaker element and it's the HD600 element, naturally. It will also fit models such as the HD545 as a replacement for broken elements. That's an upgrade, of sorts, though not the HD600 can surrounding the element.

good session phone
Posted by Doctor Detail from Northern New Jersey on 2010-02-03Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: comfort, detail
Cons: sensitivity
Great for session listening...ear openings are large and the padding on top and for ears is plush and doesn't result in sweating. People around you will be able to hear your music (as is the case with open designs). Does require an amp to get full sound, as it's not super efficient. In addition, they are pretty big, so only enthusiasts would carry them with them for listening.

More neutral than the HD650
Posted by VinnieVidi from NYC on 2010-01-29Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Sound, comfort
Cons: Needs aftermarket cable to sound its best
I though that the HD600 were far better than the darker sounding HD650. They sounded amazing straight out of a Rotel preamp as well as out of a Total AirHead.
The only problem I found with the HD600 is that the stock cable really hampers their true potential. I would recommend the Cardas cable or the Equinox... you won't be disappointed.

After all the Headphones Ive Had, These are the ones to keep!
Posted by donunus from Philippines on 2010-01-23Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Unique Engaging yet non Fatiguing Sound.
Cons: Brittle Headband, Needs an amp to perform to its potential
The HD600s are very beautiful, classy looking headphones that come in a nice looking black box for storage. The earpads, headband, drivers, and cables are all replaceable. There is also an abundance of aftermarket high end cables available for these cans if you ever decide to upgrade the ones that came with them.
Now how do these HD600s sound? In short, HD600s are neutral and detailed headphones without sounding clinical. The details are all there without shouting out at you like some other headphones with too many peaks in the frequency range. I'd like to say these are so neutral that they have no sound signature, but I'm sorry to say thats only a dream for us headphone hobbyists. No such headphone exists yet. What we have here is the Sennheiser house sound in its finest form. The sound signature tends to the warm and smooth side of things without losing any extension in the highs. The Midrange is superb and almost three dimensional especially when used with crossfeed. Listening to music on these cans is so much fun because they are so natural sounding. One of the complaints I always hear about sennheiser's top models are that they are veiled sounding. I know what people mean by those complaints because these cans could sound a little dull when not paired with the right equipment. I also noticed that hd600s like to be played at medium to loud levels to sound their best. All in all I can say that there is no other headphone I would rather own than hd600s if I were forced to choose only one pair to keep.

Still a great one
Posted by Headphone Fan from Greensboro, NC on 2010-01-16Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Natural Sound, comfort
Cons: Best with upgraded cord
Have had mine for years. They sound so good that when I listen to the 650 and 800s I am not hearing enough reason to upgrade. Very wide frequency response and very smooth presentation. They have traveled well and held up to it.
They do sound best with the Cardas upgrade cable over the stock cable. Also like to be driven by a good headphone amp.

Magical Sound in Ugly Marble Packaging
Posted by Menisk from Canberra, Australia on 2010-01-15Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Laid-back and balanced presentation, silky smooth, extremely comfortable
Cons: The marble finish leaves a lot to be desired
The HD600s achieve something truly magical in the world of audio; an extremely emotive and musical presentation with no sacrifice of detail. They're also made to be extremely comfortable, you'll forget that you're wearing them a few moments after putting them on. Unfortunately Sennheiser achieved something pretty monstrous in the world of aesthetics, the marble finish leaves a lot to be desired. It's just easiest to remember that you don't have to see them when they're on your head.
The 600s present a laid-back and ever so slightly warm presentation that maintains beautiful musicality that absorbs you into the music. The bass is deep, well textured and full without flooding the lower midrange. The midrange is fluid and seductive when it needs to be, but can also be bone dry if the music requires it and the highs are extremely detailed but slightly laid-back and silky smooth which allows these headphones to maintain musicality and detail without shoving it down your throat. Everything is so well proportioned, no part of the music is emphasised or impedes on another which is quite a feat and something I haven't heard in other headphones such as the K701.
These headphones are forgiving of poorly recorded music to a degree, but they'll show the unnatural sound of some electronic music - and the awesomely natural sound of Vinyl - and certainly do much better with warmer and more mellow music or classical. However they certainly do the more mellow Red Hot Chili Peppers justice, however for the faster more aggressive rock you might want to find something else. Although these headphones are extremely dynamic and make music sound extremely large, aggressive rock needs a more forward high end and midrange to my ears.
In terms of amplification, without it these sound flat and lifeless. A few hundred dollar tube amplifier or solid state will both do the HD600s justice. Tubes make the midrange even more seductive and the highs a little more laid back while solid state has an extremely detailed sound that's still smooth.
The HD600s are perfect for anyone looking for something laid-back, balanced and comfortable as long as you can live with the less than perfect marble finish on them.

Great
Posted by treelogger from Los Gatos, CA on 2010-01-15Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Clear, balanced, comfortable
Cons: Not noise tight
I've owned the 600s for about 5 years now; at the time, they were the top of the Sennheiser line. They are currently on my head, which is typical for the office. I listen to classical (often orchestral, some piano and chamber), and some jazz. I love the 600s, because they are so clear, open and balanced. The clarity means that you can hear the empty space between instruments (string quartet for example), and hear the little nuances like the flute player breathing. The balance means that the bass (piano, organ, tuba) won't overpower the rest of the music, nor will piccolos and violins make your ears ring like a trip to the shooting range (or a bad rock concert). I think of them as a neutral instrument that reproduces what is on the CD, without coloring it. They are also very comfortable (for hours at a time). Mine have lasted through about 5 years of use 5 days a week; the pads look worn, but they work great. I've tried them with a borrowed balanced cable on a balanced amplifier, and that improves them, but is a bit too rich for office use.
The only drawback is: They don't shield noise at all. Now that I'm a 2-person office, my officemate can often tell me what I'm listening to. And I can (unfortunately) hear background noise.

Great bang for buck
Posted by TM from Portland, OR on 2010-01-01Posted on Sennheiser HD 600
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: High resolution, great bandwidth, clarity, comfort
Cons: Large, somewhat fragile cord
Owned 10 years, heard many imitators, extremely few that equal or better these cans. Excellent bang for the buck. Spend your money wisely and you'll be very happy. I have been. Downside is that like all large headphones you look like "Mickey Mouse" and the cable can be a little fragile. The good news is that they are very comfortable and the cable is literally plug and play, much more so than your computer.

Worth every penny IMHO.
