Sennheiser PX 100-II Product Reviews

In an act of refinement, Sennheiser has revised a classic extremely good headphone to produce one with fuller bass response. The cool folding features and portable sizing remain, but the PX100-II adds deeper lows to one of the most sonically pleasing tones in the category, along with a single-sided cable that prevents cord tangling when folded. The beefier headband design definitely improves durability and the small 'on-ear' open-back earpieces allow you to remain aware of activity near you when out and about on busy city streets.

Excellent on ear headphones

Pros: Good Value, Great sound, Comfortable, Well built.
Cons: Can ruin friendships :'(

The Sennheiser PX 100-II are an excellent pair of headphones that deliver crisp and clear sound with a powerfull bass. Hi-fi speakers and top shelf materials were used for this product. They are comfortable and light, in time you may forget you put them on, but they are built sturdy so you don't get the feeling they're going to break in your hands.

Good first headphones

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Brings fairly nice bass and good treble for price
Cons: Bass not very strong, higher freqs can distort

The first serious set of headphones I ever bought, they brought me to sounds in my music I didn't even know were there. The bass is nice for being under 100 bucks. Also the durability is second to none. I dropped them, accidentally slammed them on the floor, and they didn't break and the sound wasn't affected. These last through a lot, and the sound is clear for earpads.

Great, but not perfect

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable, nice design, light, great sound, cheap
Cons: No closed audio

When I bought these, I wanted a headphone with great sound qaulity. After I search some on the internet and I came acros the Sennheiser PX-100-II and the Closed version of it the PX-200-II. When I looked at the specs I had no doubt the PX-100-II was the better one and I direct order them. Some time after I realized it hasn't closed audio which it's very important if you want to enjoy your music. But enough of that, and let's talk about the PX-100-II.
When I got the box the first thing you will notice is that the exactly headphone is really small, no wonder because it's a traveling headphone, but still. When I opent the box I found a carrying pouch, and the headphone itself. The carrying pouch is nice but it won't really protect your headphone. But let's go on to the actually headphone.
When i first put it on my head I really was surprised about the sound qaulity and the comfort. I was really impressed because it's a really cheap and small headphone (bought it for $41,56). It's really light and portable so if you travel a lot it's perfect for that too. The only thing why I still have in-ear headphones is because it doesn't include closed audio. You will notice the smallest external noise, and that will disturb your music. But also people who standing around you can also enjoy your music and that is something you don't want.
In the end these headphones are definetly worth buying, but when the area is too crowded you still want some in ear headphones

Disappointed

Pros: Size and comfort
Cons: Heavy bass and poor mids and highs.

I've had the opportunity to listen to the PX100 (1) a couple of years ago and for as far as I remember I was kind of surprised by the sound of that little headphone.
This week I'll go backpacking so I needed a portable headphone which needed to be cheap and foldable.
So, with the vague memory of the PX100 still in my head, I purchased the PX100 II to take in my backpack. After I got home it put it on......
It looks and feels nice but the soundquality is poor. There is a ridiculously large amount of bass and the mids/high sound muffled (by the bass). It sounds like I put the bass knob on my amp all up and the highs all down.

I know it's a lot to ask for a cheap and proper sounding headphone, but this was quite disappointing.

PX 100 ii not as good as the original

Recommend Product: No
Pros: great build, one sided cable
Cons: instrument separation, clarity

i was hoping for an improvement or at least a replacement for my original px 100s - bought these based on reviews saying they were an improvement.

tried everything to like these - burn in, stretch the headband, mod quarter-sized holes in the earpad, equalize the hell out of it - all to no avail. I have two players - an ipod nano 5th gen and a clip+ - and on both of these the px 100 iis lose miserably to the original px100 in everything but the bass.

most noticeable is the instrument separation - the IIs are congested - like all the sound is emanating from the middle of the driver, while the originals pxs have better imaging/placement, resulting in better clarity.

i know the original px 100s were characterized as dark, but the px100 iis outdo them in this regard due to the bloated bass.

sennheiser, why mess with the formula?? we aren't looking for dre beats!!

Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Good Sound, Great value for the money
Cons:

Ive been using my pair since late 2003, so they are durable. They are also comfortable. At the time I paid around $38, and I liked them so much I bought a second pair for home use.

Great sound for inexpensive headphones, though some of the newer models may have surpassed them (8 years is a long time). They still blow away the head phones that come with iPods and MP3 players.

Not an improvement over PX 100!

Pros: Better build quality, still a good deal.
Cons: Less hi-freq detail compared to Gen 1

I sense that the negative reviews posted so far are from "gen 1" owners, and that is my experience also. I have had 3 pairs of PX-100s and I have thought them amazing for their size and price. I have given another 3 for gifts.
The Gen 2 is not in the same category: that of a real bargain I cant wait to share with everybody else.

The build quality of Gen 2 seems better, more solid and barely heavier. I really like the single cord. But despite the better bass, there is clearly a sense of muddiness to the treble in direct comparison to the Gen 1. I had to pull off the foam cushions to be sure there was no extra plastic wrapping they forgot to remove, it was that noticeable. Having said that, it is still a pretty good small headphone. And a few adjustments of the equalizer make up for it . In fact it sounds a lot better when used with a headphone amp. It could be it just isn't being driven adequately by an iPod. Honestly sometimes I feel the PX gen 1 sounds better than the HD 650 when both are fed by an iPod.

But I have to say, the Gen 1 sounds amazingly good paired with a iPod nano Gen 5 (which is the really small square new one) compared to Gen 2.
People cant believe it when I have them listen. Good thing I have one Gen 1 in good shape left as a spare...

UPDATE for anyone who cares: I add this because I have broken in the Gen 2 for over 100 hours and I can honestly say I like them but they are just completely different in character than the Gen 1. The Gen 1 has more spatial detail and simply a better headphone. A true classic, 5 stars. I have done A-B comps with Gen 1 and 2, and the 2's have better bass but you lose all sense of echo and being in a large space. The Gen 1 portrays all this clearly.

Pros: Compact, comfortable, Strong bass
Cons: Blurry mids and highs, too much midbass

Like the others who have gone back to the PX-100, I too find the bass extends too high and too much into the midbass spectrum, obscuring detail. What I had hoped for was something between the PX-100 and the PX 100-II. I like the deep bass well enough, that's an improvement for us iPod listeners. Too bad the midrange and highs suffer.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: comfortable, light, easy to drive (no amp needed)
Cons: boomy midbass

I use these mostly to watch TV. They replaced a pair of old Sony "Mega Bass" headphones that cost a little less and were even more comfortable. But these have a fuller sound than the Sonys, plenty of bass, clear midrange. My only gripe is the puffed-out midbass. It's not a problem in the application for which I use them (mostly TV dialogue), but I would not use them for music. They are light and foldable. I wish the earpads were soft foam instead of scratchy stuff, but this is a minor point, since they are much more breathable than "pleather."

Pros: comfortable
Cons: bad sound quality

I am going to join the crowd (some here, many more on other sites) finding the PX 100-II markedly inferior to its predecessor, the PX 100. It has an absurdly accentuated midbass that, on some recordings, just about obliterates male vocals and anything else within range. And yet more is not better -- the PX 100 went as deep, has better slam and rythym. I've put my PX 100-II away and am listening to the original once again, once more quite amazed at its performance to price ratio. I listen to all kinds of music, too -- rock, folk, country, classical, and it holds its own on all counts.

I am frankly astonished at the blog by the good people at headroom where they not only praise the PX 100-II, they rank it over the Grado SR60. But they didn't A/B it with the PX 100.

btw I am doing my listening at my work computer through a Total Bithead. I highly recommend btw getting from radio shack a rotating right angle attachment for the headphone cord, cost around $3.

just to be clear, the PX 100-II's aren't totally unlistenable all the time, but their ability to render completely unlistenable tracks that I know very well renders them worthy of no more than one star imo. Why did Sennheiser wreck a little classic? I'm thankful I have an extra one stashed away. Listening to Lunasa The Kinnity Sessions right now, on the PX 100s, and when the acoustic guitar hits low notes, you really hear it all the way, without any hint of bloat or muddiness. THIS is how music should sound.

in terms of rankings below, I'm giving below average ranking for durability based on general experience with Senns, not this model.

Amazing purchase!

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Amazing detail, great mids, amazing lows, punchy bass, beautiful highs.
Cons: Uncomfortable after 45 mins. for big heads.

Right away fresh from the box I noticed the bass was very obvious, even more than the PX100s I have tested at the store. The initial listening experience was just bass to me with mids and treble kinda there, so I let a few minutes of songs go through to warm up the drivers. Right through watching the FIFA 2010 World Cup (England vs Algeria ;D), all the frequencies came out beautifully! I heard sounds (instruments, etc) that I haven't heard before. I was already blown away by the Porta Pros, but these PX100-IIs added an extra layer of detail to the mix. So that was a nice surprise. At this point, the PPs in comparison had more sparkly highs and a bit better 3d soundstage. The PX100s at the store were also more on the treble side. The PX100-IIs beats them in mids and lowish lows? and bass.

Alright, this mostly applies for people with watermelon heads like mine, but I found these to be less comfortable than the Porta Pros. Initially they were great, but after like 45mins my ears start to hurt. The padding on top are nice though, and sit great. The Porta Pros definitely win in this department, since 1. They have the comfort setting 2. is more flexible, less rigid, and the speakers move more freely. So I was able to wear the PPs for hours on end. I can't say for the PX100s since I only had them on for 2 sample songs.

These only came with a pouch, instead of the traditional plastic "ritual" case. As much as I like the plastic case, the pouch was not bad at all either. I was able to fit the headphones, my ipod touch, and IEM all in there.

In comparison to the PPs, they also give you a pouch, but also an adapter for the big equipment. The pouch for the PP is rather small, and I always found it tricky to put the cans in, despite making the PPs as small as possible.

Conclusion:

Well there it is guys. Hopefully over time when burning them in, I would get even more out of these headphones. But still I believe for this price point you simply can't go wrong. Simply fantastic for mp3 players such as my Ipod Touch. You can also use them for gaming, I used these with COD4. Though I think the PPs had more of a 3D feel as mentioned be4 and the volume was more sensitive.

These are the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on. The sound quality is amazing on these. The sound is warm, but lacks a bit of clarity. I need a custom EQ for the extra treble. Nonetheless, still great portable headphones to have.

Pros: Great sound, great looks, decent price
Cons: They're a little on the expensive side for what they are

I've owned the original PX-100 and now these, and I have to say, these are a definite improvement. Pretty much every part of the frequency band is presented quite beautifully. Most earpad headphones hurt my ears after a while, but these are so light that they never pose a problem. This isn't the fault of the headphones, but just keep in mind that they're open-backed and will be a little noisy to others around you. I think they're great headphones and agree with the other reviewer that they're on par (and better in some ways) than my Grado SR60is. In my opinion, for what they are, I feel as though they're a little expensive, but I'll recommend them anyways. BUY 'EM!

Not the sound I was hoping for

Pros: style, design
Cons: too much bass makes them sound muddy to me

Here's the deal. I LOVE my PX-100s. I've repaired them in 3 different ways and have worn them everyday for over 2 years. Yes I'm a dork.

I have come to truly trust the good folks at HeadRoom and I often follow their suggestions and agree with their descriptions and reviews. They've steered me towards great portable phones like the AKG K414P which also sound fantastic. I read their portable headphone shootout and their team gave the PX-100ii a great score, the highest score actually. I'd read other reviews that were mixed, the negative reviews mostly were expecting them to sound more like the original PX-100. I thought, different could be good and the HeadRoom team love them, so I went for it. I was open minded and expected to find something different and better that I would love.

I immediately thought they were too bassy and that the bass wasn't particularly tight. My first impression is that the bass overwhelmed the overall sound of the phones and that even though the mids and highs were still there, the listening experience was, to my ears and my mind, muddy. I wore them everyday for a week waiting for my opinion to change or for my taste to adjust. It didn't happen. I really appreciate clarity and detail in my listening experience. These didn't do it for me. I'm not a classical music guy either, I'm a rock and roll guy who loves big sound and great production. I like bass. I just found myself missing my beat up old PX-100s so I grabbed them, put them on and returned the PX-100iis.

I have to admit, I was surprised to be disappointed in something that the HeadRoom team recommended so highly, but it happened.

The Little Headphone That Could

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Remarkably good sound quality for its size and price; Comfortable
Cons: None significant

I received these PX 100-II headphones earlier today. From the moment I plugged them into my fourth-generation (last year's) iPod Nano, I was quite impressed with the sound that came out of these little things. Sure, they don't quite come close to the sound quality of my bigger, more expensive open-air headphones - but then again, no $100 headphone of any size does. These perform remarkably well with hardly any flaws given their dimumitive size and moderate price. I had a pair of the original PX 100 headphones, and the new version is a worthwhile update (or shall I say upgrade?) to an already good pair of portable open-air headphones. Compared to the old PX 100's, the new Mark II's sounded a bit tighter in the low end and less dark.

Anybody who wants immensely better sound quality than the bundled iPod earbuds but either dislikes in-ears or doesn't need any isolation should purchase one of these. Their closed-back siblings, the PX 200-II's, are also worth considering, especially if you want a little isolation.

~~~ Please note that my scores are relative to other headphones which are priced comparably to the model reviewed here. ~~~
