Good closed portable for acoustic music

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfort, Sound, Build
Cons: Small earpieces

These phones remind me of my former AKG 702, is there a Germanic house sound? Great on highs and mids, a little anemic on the bass but good overall balance for acoustic music.

I heartily second the notion that these headphones need burn-in. While I'm sometimes dubious about burn-in, I usually do it because it may help the sound. Occasionally, as with the phones, the sound is dramatically improved with burn-in. I found out of the box a weird sound, especially during percussive piano passages. After about 50 hours of burn-in that distortion went away. Overall, the sound smoothed out after 50 hours. I'm not sure the 250 hours is absolutely necessary.

I was looking for a closed lightweight headphone. I wasn't looking for a portable or earpad design, but those types fit my requirements. I wanted closed for some isolation (if I want super isolation, I go to the Etymotic4s). I wanted lightweight for comfort. Heavier phones cause me headaches. While I loved the sound of some recently purchased Senn650 and ATM50, they just killed the top of my head and gave me headaches. These are lightweight enough to not do that.

Position is also important. I'm used to Grado earpad fit and initially positioned these back on my ears a bit too far. Bringing them forward helped with sound and comfort.

Build on these is fantastic. The metal headband, like with the Grados, allows for easy adjustment to fit. I would have preferred the headbands being able to split, as with the newer DT1350.

Again, they sound great for acoustic music, such as classical and jazz.

Pass on these

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Well made, look pretty
Cons: Weak bass, cable does not detach

No matter how long I listen to these beautifully made Beyerdynamic T50p headphones, I cannot make myself like them. Yes the mid-range is pleasant and detailed and so are the highs, but the mid-range seems to be tainted by a hollow microphonic sound a bit like the noise you get when you tap the metal headband. The overall balance sounds weak in the bass compared to other headphones I use. Even the Headroom Airhead amp can't work its magic on these. I think I'll give them to the family for TV watching, the nice clear midrange and highs should be just right. These phones have a twin cable which does not detach. Big mistake if you want these for traveling. Believe it or not, I have spent more time trying to take all the ugly twists out of the twin cables than actually listening to these things. As for the unnecessarily large carrying case and the noisy tearing noise its velco strip makes each time you open it, find something else to put them in. Back to the much loved Sennheiser HD600's until I find something more suitable for voyages. Any suggestions?

Very good on ear headphones

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Excellent fit, light on the ears, high detailed sound
Cons: Bass is there but seems a bit restrained

Overall it has a great sound. I love the clear details in the highs playing classical and jazz vocals on it. I feel though that the bass would open up with further use.

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Easy on the head and good overall sound portability is ideal
Cons: Probably a little more bass

Overall a very satisfying sound as compared to my akg 702 and at 5000 cherry ear cups it seems to be an easier load than the other two headphones
