More Sound Than What You Pay For

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great Sound, Great Build, Superb Comfort
Cons: can't handle ALL kinds of music
Based on Shure's previous history in the music business and the price of these headphones, I picked myself up a pair when they were released. And it was money well spent.
These headphones are really well built, they do not feel flimsy, they have a nice glossy finish, and they are very comfortable. They rest gently on top of your head and fit snugly around your ears. (I have tried the 440's and they "clamp" onto your head rather than "rest").
Sound quality, connected directly into an iPhone playing 320kbps audio, these sound pretty good. The bass is well balanced, mids and highs are present, but the soundstage is somewhat lacking. You don't get too much instrument seperation, but overall these deliver good quality well balanced sound.
Amped, the 240's plugged into a friend's Total Airhead, they sound really really nice. The soundstage expands greatly. (as expected coming through the Airhead). And instrument seperation is now much more distinguished. Another noticeable change was the bass, it is much richer and enhances the overall sound. (it does not overpower the mids and highs at all).
Since these are very portable headphones, a more convenient amp for travel (walking, commuting) would be my own Fiio E5. It is obviously not as powerful as the airhead, but the differences are still noticeably better.
These headphones sound great for the price, but they may not handle all genre's of music very well.
For example, I ran them through most genre's, and I found it did not do classical music justice - even for closed headphones. The soundstage is simply not big enough to fully appreciate classical music. And I found when editing films with these on, you want something with more attention to detail.
So just beware if you do listen to mainly classical - although with rock, rap, country, and even techno (esp. amped) they sound great.
These headphone pack a punch for their price.
