Ultimate Ears UE700 Product Reviews

The Ultimate Ears UE700 are in-ear monitors designed with tweeter / woofer microdrivers for the most pristine sound possible at this price. Long the choice of of stage performers and professional musicians, the UE700 features extremely tiny earpieces -- amongst the smallest in the industry -- that make you wonder how UE managed to stuff perfectly tuned dual drivers in there. Authoritative bass response and a sweet crossover into soaring mids & highs make the UE700 a great musical performer at an achievable investment.

Disappointed

Pros: Good fit; quality product
Cons: Ear tips fall off; drivers distort; poor sound

This is my second set of Ultimate Ears IEMs; the super.fi 5s that I used and abused for years were ten times the headphone. My biggest gripe is that the ear tips fall off when not in use and when I pull the earphone out of my ear the ear tip stays in. Beyond that the sound quality is better than most of what you will find at Walmart but doesn't compare to others in this price range. They are super comfortable and look great. The durability of the product is great but I am rating it low based on design and again, the ear tip's ability to stay on the body of the IEM. Some have rated the durability low based on the gauge of the wire, this is not a true representation of the durability based on the kevlar reinforcement in the wire. Thoroughly disappointed in this purchase.

Excellent sound

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Nicely balance; detailed yet powerful
Cons: Tiny earpieces; treble occasionally edgy

These are naturally balanced headphones that do extremely well at their price point. The trick is to get a good seal with these tiny things by trying out different ear tips, but once you do, the combination of deep, controlled bass, detailed and extended highs, and nice mids makes them work for all genres. (If the stock tips don't work, try the Shure "olive" tips with the larger openings; they work better for me.) The only slight drawback to the overall good sound is the highs, which occasionally can be just a bit raspy. But the much more expensive Shure 535s have the same problem--to an even greater degree--and I think with the right equipment and a good fit in your ear, these will actually perform just as well overall. I use the 700s with a Fostex HP-P1 and Fiio E17 (the E17 amp has slightly cleaner highs than the Fostex, plus tone controls which help bring out the bass of the 700s). I get good sound with that combination. These 700s have a slight advantage over the UE600s by being just slightly better balanced and cleaner, which allows them to work better over a wider range of genres and recordings.

Pros: Great Sound
Cons: Dont stay in ear, Fragile cord

I couldn't help but have a little buyers remorse after purchasing these and trying out the product. The sound don't get me wrong is very good for the price. Problems arise however as soon as you're moving around, walking, at the gym or anything like that. The headphones rely on a perfect seal inside the ear to provide quality sound as soon as this seal is broken and the headphone even slightly slips the sound goes out the window. Tried all the ear bud sizes which makes me think the company new about this problem however this does not repair the issue at all. Buy them if you intend to never move while they're in otherwise I'd look for something more stable in ear.

Pros: Sold deep tight bass.warm and detailed mid/highs . Great value.
Cons: None, nada , zip, zilch.

For the price these are hard to beat. Break in was easy and they keep getting better. Solid bass , deep and tight. They are very warm with good detail. I rip CD's into apple lossless and with a BitHead and iPad the sound is absolutely incredible. A big improvement over stock Apple sound chipset/phones. I am very pleased as this is not a huge investment. I normally listen with Grado's but wanted a portable set up. My BitHead and iPod (line in) is almost as good as the digital with iPad. They really fill out with the BitHead amp. Such a nice sweet presetation. getting a good seal is essential. Try all the sizes, and get the right tips for each ear. They may be like mine and need differet sizes for right and left. I am large on left and med on the right. I think the foam comply's give a better seal and sound. Not as loud or phat sounding like the Grado 325is but I am loving these.

Best Deal in this Price Range

Pros: Sound quality on portable devices
Cons: Cord durability questionable

I've owned a pair of Etymotic ER4's for eight years, and they finally gave out on me (one ear bud was pumping out more sound than the other). I'm a frequent air traveler, so I consider myself lucky to have had them last as long as they did. This time I decided to spend a little less than the $300 for new Ety's, so I picked these up after reading many reviews. So far I concur with everything that has been said - the sound stage is sonically pleasing, the bass is just about right (it's not overwhelming as some have said), and the fit is actually more comfortable than my Ety's.

Two things to beware of: the cord is both short and VERY thin. Amazon is riddled with reviews of people who have had problems with the cord connections, so these are not headphones to be treating badly. Luckily the case is hard-sided and will stand up to travel a bit better than the soft-side Ety case (although I will say that the Ety cord is FAR superior and shows no wear after 8 years). Oh, and there's no shirt clip, in case you were used to that.

Bottom line: I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase so far. I'm just breaking these puppies in, and the sound is wonderful. I don't even have to turn up the volume as far as I did with my Etymotics. Something about the build in these phones really delivers the volume! My only real problem is that Amazon dropped the price by $50 two days after I ordered them... but that's just my bad luck! :)

Good Value

Pros: Very comfortable, sound great
Cons: Cord may have issues with strain relief

Ordering from Headroom went well and I received the product quickly in excellent condition.

When I received the headphones, the medium silicone tips installed were a very good fit for my ears. I also felt they were very comfortable and light. The isolation is almost as good as foam ear plugs.

Playing some tracks from Enya, I found the mid range sound very clear and the bass was in balance and deep. What I didn't expect was a good deal of sibilance (harsh, almost painful) on the vocals. I tried correcting this with the EQ on my iRiver T10 player and it was able to remove most but not all.

I then tried the Conform foam tips and found I couldn't insert them past the rib on the stems due to the plastic core. This wasn't really a problem and I discovered that this cleared up the harshness completely even with the EQ set back to neutral.

I tried the silicone tips again, but didn't push them past the rib this time and the sound quality was also excellent. I then studied the pictures and discovered that the tips had been installed too far in from the factory.

I am a little concerned with the design of the cord. There is little strain relief for the cord on the right angle jack and at the phones as well. Time will tell if this will be a problem.

So all in all, the sound quality is very good, the fit and comfort is excellent, especially with the foam tips and the isolation is great for working in the cube farm.
