Big Sound... LEAK
Posted by Maximus from Ottawa, ON - Canada on 2012-10-16Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: No
Pros: Sound as great as they should, not overly bassy, just satisfying to hear
Cons: Very high sound leakage due to open slots behind headband area that is hidden in pictures
I'm not an expert by any means, I researched long hours on this site and others before purchasing these Headphones, thinking I was getting a great Bass oriented Heaphone set that was big and not the easiest to carry around but had great sound quality and PRIVACY due to big comfy couch like earpads...
What I got when I opened the box was exactly that...! :D
There I am hopping on the bus with theses behemoths of headphones I bought 5 minutes ago, appreciating the vivid sound they produce, but little did I know I wasn't the only one following the beat... I figured I was getting looks from old men cause the 'phones looked funny and they were probably jealous of how comfy they looked!
Turns out I arrive back at the office, show my new pride and joy to a colleague who tries them on and that's when I went... :S
"Gawwd these have soo much sound leak for sealed back cup design..!
So here I am, trying to return an open box headphone set to the poor little shop close to my place, minutes after having felt so lucky to have found these at a decent price.
Now hopefully I can get a refund and find another pair of decent headphones that remain more quiet to the exterior world... Sennheiser HD 429 perhaps?
Conclusion, even if you like the big mother look, and you don't mind that it will take up half the space in your backpack, this cannot possibly make a good portable Headphone option as there is way too much noise leak due to semi open back (3 slots each side)

Great Headphones
Posted by NickJames from Dayton, OH on 2012-02-13Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable, Great Bass, Appearance
Cons: not very portable
Great headphones, with great Bass that tingles your head. Can wear for hours and hours because of the comfy leather ear pads, sometimes makes your ears hot and sweaty after long periods of time. Wish they were a little more portable, Cannot really walk around and wear them. I use them generally at my desk, when im in bed or when im at the library, not very mobile.

Fantastic and Comfortable Headphones
Posted by asaharyev from Boston, MA on 2012-02-08Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great Bass, Very Good Mids, Incredibly Comfortable, Durble
Cons: Loss of quality at highs
These really are fantastic headphones. I bought these for $70 and have had them for nearly four years, and they're still in great shape, both physically and acoustically. When my nearly 5 year old (then) Grado SR60s were retired to at home only I bought these for commuting. I listen to an eclectic mix, from hip hop, dubstep, and grindcore to death metal, power metal, and even some 90s pop, and these headphones play most of it very well. On songs which have a large amount of higher tones, I would prefer the SR60s, but compared to its ultra bass competitors, such as the Beats headphones, these are more comfortable, more durable, and have a better bass, and comparable mid/highs, even at four years old listening 4+ hours per day on average. Also great headphones for Skyrim and other video games.
5 stars all around for the price range.

For those wondering to go with Studio Beats vs. XB700s
Posted by sertz from Edmonton, AB on 2011-11-07Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Amazingly accurate and well-controlled bass, tremendous value
Cons: Quite large... But hey, wear them proudly
I fell into the craze and bought a pair of white Studio Beats by Dre headphones earlier this month. Initially I was blown away by the bass, but the mids and highs were lacking in some areas, especially in guitar/treble heavy sections of metal or even folk music. These headphones are definitely made for the rap crowd, but not so much for any other kinds of music.
HOWEVER, even if you are a huge rap fan, seriously consider the Sony XB700's. They have *better* bass than the Studio Beats, in that it's handled in a much cleaner way without any distortion even on the lowest of basslines. The Beats impress in loudness, but on the lower bass sections of songs such as "Say What You Say" - Dr. Dre/Eminem it distorts on the lowest notes (but does a good job to make you forget with how much your head is vibrating) where the XB700's maintain a smooth, punchy and resonating bassline.

the Kings of fun-fi
Posted by WhiteCrow From head-fi from Scappoose ,OR on 2011-10-23Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfort, build, price, sound, Easy to drive
Cons: Slow
I have had these for a few years now, the longest headphone I have owned thus far with all my buying and selling. The XB700's are the king of Fun-fi in my opinion. These monstrous headphones crush any other headphone in it's price range ofr sheer bass/warmth. These can be found for around $80 with some looking but fakes flood the market with Sony's "lower end" products so I suggest buying from a repudiate dealer.
Comfort:
Well just looking at these things reminds me of my bed, The ear cushions are like pillows, they just rest on my head, and I have a fairly sizable noggin.
Sound:
EARTH SHATTERING BASS, is not the only thing to expect from these headphones!
Yes these emphasize bass and it's amazing bass. very punchy as well as explosive. These will rattle ytour brain if up lo loud I fear. The mid range though recessed is notably changed with amping, I am not the only one who feels this way and it's almost like a different headphone when amped. The highend is nice and subdued b ut by no means silent.
Build:
Well i have had these for a LONG time. They are like new, but I take care of my things. The cable is very nice and the flay tangle resistance design is a very nice touch. The cousins break down over time, and change the sound for the better I feel so far.
Looks:
I think these are a stylish headphone, nice and sleek, very minimalistic.

comfy AND powerful
Posted by pOtAtOe94 from Singapore, Singapore on 2010-09-17Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: awesome sound quality . Bass , mid-range and treble sounds perfect . extremely comfy "cushions"
Cons: sorry , but sound seemed to leak if played beyond 80dB
SONY MDR-XB700 , I've been using this headset for 6 months now
COMFORT
This is one of the PLUSHIEST headphones i have ever own and will ever own . it does get a little warm after a while , just a little , you wouldnt mind , The earpads are really really plush and i loooovveeee them .They clamp your head rather securely .
PORTABILITY
This may seem like a real downside , its really big , bringing it out may be a little problematic , They dont fold , they dont bend inwards , all you could do is to adjust the headband shorter for easier storage .They have something really interesting , Flat Cables , at first i thought only Monster own those cables , but whatever the fact is , they are really great , untangle-ing cables becomes a thing of the past , even if you were to tie any knots , they would be easily untied .They are eye catching to the public (is it a pro or a con?)
PERFORMANCE
Bass is good , clear , thumping , rumbling ... the mid-range and trebles are clear and well reproduced as well . Okay , simply to put it , Rn'B sounded like you are in the Dance club and could feel the rumble literately . Rock and Metals Sounded like the band is playing for you in YOUR room ,im not trying to say that it's extremely loud , but its extremely satisfying , you can feel the emotions that the artists are trying to voice out ... a feeling no words can describe. It boasts a jaw-dropping 3Hz-28,000Hz frequency response with a power handling capacity of a staggering 3000mW !!!(if you believe the box)
MATERIAL
There's the Leather / Leatherette for the earpads and the headband rest, Brushed Aluminium for the extended part of the headband which makes it feel rigid and plastic , they used plastic for the housing and headband and sprayed some really nice paint on them (although they scratch when dropped) but they somehow seemed tough and difficult to break (doesnt mean they dont , so dont try it).
PRICE
It cost reasonably for such an amazing product as this . Singapore retails it at S$199 .we dont seem to have the 1/4 audiojack and the carrying pouch which other countries do ,i felt cheated :x
COMPARISON?
I have tried my friend's Monster's Lady Gaga HeartBeats intensively and compared with the Mdr-xb700 ,to tell you frankly , the HeartBeats' trebles are clearer and more precise than the xb700 , however , the mdr700's bass quality is only slightly "better" than the HeartBeats . These Headset and Earphones could "fight" , they are very closely on par , and that makes me really mad >:( how can something so small possibly be that closely on par with my 50mm Driver Headphone !?!?!? i dont know if its Monster's secret technology or whatever it may be ... I'll still be going with my Mdr xb700 which provide sound and comfort .Like.No.Other.
CONCLUSION
I suggest you go down to any nearby store which allows you to try out their headphones , try these babies and i'd bet , you'll be amazed .

BIG 'phones, BIG sound!
Posted by nickman from Canada on 2010-01-14Posted on Sony MDR-XB700
Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Very soft earpads, very comfortable, BIG bass
Cons: Slightly recessed treble, peculiar looks
Big headphones that are big on comfort and big on sound. The huge earpads are very comfortable, however your ears may get a bit warm in a while. The bass is powerful and impactful, which causes a slight recess in treble. The sound stage feels artificially wide. Also, Sony's peculiar muscle-plus-steel look is not for everyone. Nontheless, an excellent headphone for the price, especially if you like bass.
