Awesome thump for the buck!

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Deep bass, rich sound, awesome styling
Cons: Moderate noise cancelling, limited sound palet

The Studio Beats sound pretty amazing and of course, being Beats they thump the bass and have the best styling in the market! The noise cancelling technology is only average and the way Monster overcomes this is to flood the phones with deep, rich sound. This works great for Pop, Hip-Hop, Rock and loud music but not so wonderful for Jazz, Blues or Classical music where greatness is defined by the nuances and details and listening levels tend to be more subdued. If you listen primarily to the former, it's hard to go wrong with these. If you listen to other forms of music or at lower levels, these may not be for you.

Decent Sound, Mechanically Failed

Posted by RDustinB from The Orion Arm on 2012-07-09

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Noise Isolation, Low End, Single Cable
Cons: Weight, Headband, Mechanical, Price, High End

The sound quality of these Beats is no better than the Klipsch ear bud headphones I currently own. And actually the Klipsch ear buds have a much crisper high end than the Beats do.

The beats are heavy, mechanically not reliable, have a terrible headband and are way too pricey for the "name". I would suggest Monster make a generic and drop the price by 50% so they don't have to keep paying Dr. Dre. I hope this fad disappears soon.

The joints where the phones collapse broke on me after about a year, but forget about Monster helping you after a year. They will just tell you the speech that "we only warranty our products for one year". For this reason that Monster will not stand behind their products, will I not recommend this product to anyone.

What an upgrade

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable, Look awesome
Cons: lousy noise-canceling

I've been monkeying around with low-end skullcandies for a while, and these were like a gift from god after those. They get used every day at home, in the car, and at school, and I've had no problems with durability. They hold up fine when crammed in an overstuffed backpack, and that alone should vouch for the construction of these. While I'm sure you could shop around and find better headphones for a similar price (Klipsch, Sennheiser, AKG, etc.), none of those brands are as recognizable as these. Whether or not that's a good thing is up to you. These headphones certianly make a statement, and not everybody's comfortable with that. If that's what you're going for, then these headphones are tough to beat.

As for sound quality: the only thing I have to compare them to are my dad's Bose headphones (not sure of the model- sorry. They're the noise-canceling over-ear ones, though- same as these), and while the Bose are good, these are great. The response is good at nearly every frequency, although it seems like parts of the bass range respond better than others. This is only a slight complaint, though, as it's not very noticeable. One thing that frustrates me, though, is the noise canceling. While it's a nice thing to have, it could deifnitely be better. The Bose have a far better noise-canceling capability than these. Also, you have to turn the noise-canceling on for the headphones to work. This can be frustrating, especially if I'm using them in school. Some headphones are able to still operate with the noise canceling off, and I get the sense that this would be a useful feature. Other than that, though, no complaints. These are a great set of cans, and I'd happily recommend them to potential purchasers. In fact, I already have.

Under rated amazing headphones!

Pros: Precise sound, gorgeous make, and made by two music giants, Monster cable, and the man, Dr. Dre!!
Cons: A bit pricey, would like to see a matte finish option.

I am blown away by these headphones. Any guilt I had of paying 320$ US for a pair of headphones was quickly erased when I hooked these amazing headphones up to my iPhone 4 and hearing just how gorgeous music can sound when carefully designed by two music giants like Monster cable and Dr. Dre!!!

Highly recommend these to everyone who appreciates good music played on headphones that understand just how to produce it in a small package. I mean these things sound as good if not clearer than my Cerwin Vegas!

Pros: Comfort, Sound isolation
Cons: Sound leak, bad durability

I personally don't have a pair of studios, but my friend has one and I wear them a lot. The Studios have a great sound quality. The bass is strong and the low ends are perfect. High ends and middles are better than my Tours. I think thats the reason that they are much more expensive. The sound isolation can isolate lots. But the problem is the sound leaks out when you have your volume over... 3/5 of the iPod volume bar. The durability is not really impressive because the headphone's foldable ends are not strong. They are feeble. My friend's one started to have cracks after half a year. The other friend's foldable ends are really difficult to fold and almost cracking. Those were the bad points. The rest are pretty much great. The price COULD be lowered to like the price HeadRoom is offering. It would be better if HeadRoom could have the 300 price with the limited colors. If they do, I would get these right away.

Awesome

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable,Good sound
Cons: Clarity,Noise cancellation

I have these hooked to my Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium HD without any Amp

or DAC and the bass can be a bit over powering but if you know how use your

Eq settings,Crystalizer and whatever else you got on your Sound Card you

can make your song's sound AMAZING, Music i format to 96 Khz which are

mostly all Rap but im pretty sure that any type of Genre will sound good. The

noise cancellation is a joke though it wont cancel the sound coming from your

headphones, Unless you have them on low volume but i guess they do cancel

SOME noise the pro's are much better if your really looking for better noise

cancellation and better sound overall. But like i said if you have a Amp and

Dac im pretty sure they will sound much better, They are called Studio's for

reason and that reason is you need Studio equipment if you want the best

out of them just like any other headphone. So yeh for the price tho these are

great (Got them off of Amazon on sale). And the people complaining about

them breaking iv'e had them out of the case laying on top of my Desktop all

dusty for like 2 months and they've fallen about 7 times or so on my hardwood

floor really hard by me pulling the cord with my foot, And are still in perfect

condition hence a 5 star rating on durability.

A nice pair of headphones BUT NOT PROFESSIONAL USE.

Posted by StephenDABEAT from Brantford, Ontario, Canada on 2010-12-31

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Comfortable, breathable, not bad noise cancelling, powerful bass, crisp high frequency, design
Cons: Frame is cheap, too much airflow for major sound leak, poor construction of frame

SOUND:

These headphones are great for high volume use with pounding bass and crisp high frequency. The bass is very powerful but overpowering, it throbs your head and it feels like they are bouncing off your ears when the volume is turned up. The mid bass and the mid frequency could be improved because the overpowering bass seems to over laying the mid range, it sounds somewhat muddy. The high frequency is a strong point as well; very crisp and clear and is not affected by the overpowering bass. There is a BIG downside with the headphones though. They leak very badly. I will explain this in the COMFORT review.

COMFORT:

Only at 270 grams (including batteries), the Beats Studios are very comfortable, light weight, breathable and does not hurt your ears. The ear cup cushions are very soft, they compress very well and are lightweight. The angle of the ear cups them selfs are capable of naturally fitting perfectly over your ears. Even with long hair it does not affect the headphone's performance at all. The adjustable headband doesn't slip even after use; along with a soft headband at the inside top of the headphones. All this comfort has a BIG impact, which is why the rating was lower. The Studios LEAK BADLY. What you hear when you put on the headphones, is what you would hear outside the headphones (Its that bad). The breathable ear cups is to blame. They have micro sized holes along the inside of the ear cups. This results in major leakage.

LOOK AND FEEL:

Once you put these headphones on, it seems to make you 8 times cooler then you were (not kidding). The design its self is something you don;t see very often. Its very sleek, smooth and clean design. It has a smooth outside surface and a soft inside surface where your head sits for comfort. It has two metal brackets above the hinges where the headphones fold up.They say MONSTER on one and STUDIO on the other (nice touch). The logo is show on each side that stand out . Also the silver metal ring around the ear cups is a nice finish as well.

DURABILITY:

This is another flaw, the durability should have been improved. The plastic (yes you heard me, PLASTIC) is not strong at all. Sure it is flexible but it doesn't hold well after abuse. The hinges and above the metal brackets are the main weak points. The hinges flap around a bit after a while and the plastic bends above the brackets after usage. Just the overall hardware is cheap. Expect them to brake after heavy use.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

BEST USAGE: At home, minor DJ parties, personal use.

I would NOT recommend these headphones professionals because these headphones do not fall into the Studio quality headphones. These are high end public headphones. If your a professionals that would like cheaper headphones with relatively the same sound (eg. down grading from the DENON AH-D5000 or the Sennheiser HD 650) this wouldn't cut it. The sound would feel muddy and overpowered.

But overall the Beats Studio by Dr. Dre are a within many people's needs.

Nice job.

Recommend Product: No
Pros: design is nice
Cons: fake bass, shoddy mids, and vocals, horrible scratchy treble, questionable build

I collect headphones, I love headphones, I just couldn't warm up to these, even after giving them a 200 hour burn in. The bass is there its loud and punchy but has a short decay, very faked too. The vocals seem hollow I was very aware these were made of plastic the sound proved it. The treble is simply awful harsh again hollow and often scratchy I even heard some distortion at higher volumes.
The comfort is ok tho they get hot. The headband and earcups seem cheaply made too, my buddy's set broke at the ear cups like a pair of skullcandys. They are loud but they don't handle high spl well at all. I hope dre's venture with HP brings a better product because I wouldn't attach my reputation to these at all. At 300 dollars these are more overpriced than quality.

Wannabe headphones

Recommend Product: No
Pros:
Cons: Horrible sound reproduction/accuracy, falls apart

Let me start out by saying that I have a little experience with audio, I've been doing custom car stereos with my brother for over 10 years now, I own a pair of Sennheiser PX200's, and two sets of Shure's, and my home audio is Focal driven by Denon. My music library ranges from Beethoven to Pantera to Lady Gaga. So when I say that these headphones are complete garbage I'm serious.

Yes, there is a lot of bass, too much in fact. I tried these out at Best Buy while I was shopping for my next set of headphones (I ended up getting the PX200s) and I saw these things on display and I thought to myself "oh those look cool"...a few minutes later after listening to a mix of rap, metal, classical, and piano I was utterly disgusted by these "DJ" headphones. The overabundance of bass washed out all the fine details that these things claim to reproduce. I didn't hear any distinction with stringed instruments, guitars, or drums and cymbals. The noise cancelling wasn't even that great. With the cancelling on, and the music at half volume (on my iPod nano) I could snap my finger 6 inches away from my ear and still hear it clearly. Sennheiser is definetly the way to go in terms of quality and noise cancelling if that's what you want.

These things are only good for the kids who want to play "DJ Hero" or look cool with their friends. The only other use I can think of for them is skeet shooting...

HeadRoom Response:

Spending "a few minutes", and especially in a local Best Buy, does not constitute a fair listening period to evaluate a pair of headphones.  Experienced headphone listeners know it takes time to grow accustomed to a headphones' true sound signature.

Recommend Product: No
Pros: fit, comfort, visual look & design
Cons: build quality, sound performance, value

As expected with anything made by Monster, these are over marketed and over priced for what they are. For the price of these you can buy many other well known high quality headphones and get a much better, more accurate sound. (Sennheiser, Grado, AKG, Sony Studio Professional, etc)

I agree with the main review that if you travel a LOT and NEED noise canceling then they are ok for that. Otherwise you're better off without noise canceling and spending half the money on better cans.

I've sampled these and know people who've bought them. Most have broken in one way or another and sometimes multiple times. Compare that to my Sony MDR-V6's which lasted me 12 years and cost $100!

Do your own side-by-side comparison and judge for yourself or at least read multiple opinions from various RESPECTED audiophile sources. Don't believe the people who are paid by Monster to post bogus reviews.

Beastly Beats by Monster

Posted by acid on 2010-02-16
Posted on Monster Beats by Dre Studio

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great sound, Comfortable, Great Design, Decent noise cancellation
Cons: Expensive, don't FEEL like the pricetag

The ever so popular Monster Beats deliver quite a bit of sound, and quite a bit of bass into your hungry ears.

The first thing I noticed when I placed these headphones on my head, was their great comfort. These things may look flashy, but their presence on your head is quite subtle. They fit amazingly around your ears, and rest gently atop your head. So once I got my batteries in, the switch turned to the 'on' position, the surrounding noise dissapears in an instant. I tried these first unamped, through my iPhone, playing MP3 files which were mostly 320 kbps.
Everything I played through it was handled beautifully. I tried some rap, rock, and some classical. Everything sounded very warm, precise, and musical detail was no "elephant in the room"
Playing them through my Fiio E5 amp, they open up quite a bit. I can hear much clearer instrument seperation, the soundstage becomes larger.

One downside I would note about these headphones, was the bass on certain songs was over presented. Rap music for example (you'd think this is the genre that would sound the best), had some tracks where the lyrics were not very distinguishable, because the bass had them in a chokehold.
If you can play with some EQ settings, this can be solved, but changing EQ every couple of minutes isn't great fun.

Would I recommend these 'phones? If you want something portable, good for walks, commutes, and trips, and you've got the money to spare, definitely, the Beats fit the bill. But keep in mind, these do not live up to their steep price tag. There are many other headphones out there. less expensive, that could probably sound very similar and have a more balanced bass response. They also just don't FEEL like $300 headphones. Very flimsy, and have broken on a LOT of people. Google it. As much as I love their sound, for the money they are taking from people, they should deliver a bit more. Maybe this is just me being picky, don't get me wrong, I love the sound, but for the price.....hmmm..?

WAY too much low end bass

Posted by Ry from New York on 2010-02-11
Posted on Monster Beats by Dre Studio

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Light, comfy, great wide range of sound, crisp to an extent
Cons: TOO MUCH BASS, flimsy design, short cable

I conducted an extensive comparison of some suitable studio headphones for my home studio. Based on my research, I arrived at two final choices...beats by dre and the sennheiser 650-HD. Having known what I know now, I wish I had been smarter and gotten the Sennheisers. The biggest factor in my decision was headphone.com's frequency response comparison graph. Beats by dre showed that it picked up more high-end frequency and a CONSIDERABLE amount more of low-end frequency. So I thought, great, I'll be able to pick up deep sub bass sounds and apply them in my music so that they won't be as dominant in the final product. What I failed to realize, was that all these headphones deliver is just pure, unnecessary, monstrous levels of BASS. And then MORE BASS. So much bass, in fact, that it completely drowns out any nuance of mids or well-developed high range sounds. Even every kick drum sample I scanned through in my file folder turned into a giant, indescribable THUD when I listened to them to select one for a song I was making. I will admit, the range on these headphones are unparalleled. You can surely have a wide sonic spectrum to work with if you're trying to balance different sounds in a song. However, the huge bass impact of these headphones will overshadow everything else. In my opinion, these are the ghetto blaster car audio version of premium headphones on the market today. It just seems like they needed to market these things with a biblical bass presence in order to sell. Because how else would people buy them if the sales pitch was something that stressed clarity instead of "beats"? Other things I despise about these headphones are the poor quality build. The phones are light, indeed, but strong? No way. The left ear cup fell off the phones on the 2ND DAY I had them out of the box. THE SECOND DAY. After reading other reviews by owners on other sites, I'm now looking forward to a parade of screws falling out, the headband breaking in half and god knows what else. If you are just a regular person looking for decent-looking phones that will be used in no other way than jamming tunes on your ipod, then these phones will do you great justice. You'll absolutely love them. However, if you use these phones the way they were intended, such as in the studio producing music, THEN STAY AWAY. Pay the extra money and get a recognized brand such as Sennheiser or AKG. Using these headphones will do nothing but mask the true sound of your music with unncessary bass, leaving your music lacking in other attended areas based on the fact that you couldn't hear the parts of your music that needed touching up. Not everyone wants to make music like Lil' Wayne with these phones, and Monster should have done a better job telling people that.

These are as good as they look. hands down these headphones are worth the price. they look sexy and are perfect anywhere.
