Everything I Hoped For

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Excellent sound quality, comfortable
Cons: Little isolation

I was pretty skeptical at first about dropping so much money on a pair of headphones. But oh, was I wrong. The Denon AH-D5000s are simply amazing. The bass is deep and punchy. The midrange is smooth and lush. Highs are never harsh. Vocals sound full and well-rounded. Electric guitar is precise and well-controlled. I'm hearing details in the background that went undiscovered after listening to the same song hundreds of times before (a cello line under the piano melody in a Regina Spektor song, for example). Putting these on my head and sitting back in a comfortable chair and just letting the music play has never been so enjoyable for me. My only regret is buying these during my university's exam week; I don't know how I could possibly get anything done now!

I've heard a lot of gripes about these headphones, that the bass is too big, the build quality sub-par. I would have to disagree emphatically. I have not heard anything even close to, as one review I read said, a giant whoopee cushion deflating in your ear. I mean, these are premium headphones. I don't think something like that could even pass internal review at Denon. It's silly to even think of it. But, nonetheless, I had some misgivings when I read that, but actually hearing these headphones has erased all doubt in my mind. They seem very well-constructed and sound absolutely amazing.

As far as comfort goes, I found that they don't clamp as tight as I thought they might, but I have a somewhat small head. And anyways, It's not a big deal at all. Since I wear glasses, it's actually kind of nice not having them pressed up against my temples by the headphone earpads. Otherwise, they look and feel great. I really like the wood cups, they add a very pretty, sort of retro touch. Gives them a unique flavor.

For closed-back headphones, these offer surprisingly little isolation, sound leaks both in and out quite a bit. But for me, that's a pretty minor detail in the grand scheme of things.

Overall, I would recommend these headphones to just about anyone. They're simply wonderful, and I could easily see these being the last pair of headphones I buy--they're just that good all-around.

Not bad for the price

Recommend Product: No
Pros: Comfortable and portable
Cons: Fatiguing, anemic bass

First, the upside. At the price-point, these are definitely not a terrible option. They are incredibly comfortable to wear--the clamping pressure is just enough to be secure and the band should fit almost any head well. They're so light I could forget I was wearing them. Also, they're very easily driven by a portable player, so you won't have to worry about buying an amp to get the full potential out of these, so they're a solid choice for portable use. And they look good, as an added bonus.

However, I found the sound quality to be somewhat lacking. These headphones are fairly light on the bass and have a VERY forward sound. Electronic and other music with lots of treble has a tendency to sound sharp or even a little harsh. There have been a few times where I had to wince a bit at a particularly unpleasant note, even after about 50 hours of breaking in. Perhaps this is something that will go away after more use, but I think that any pair of headphones should be much more listenable right out of the box. In addition, I'm not sure if I feel that the plastic headband is all that durable, but only time will tell.

Overall, the 448s are a great choice if you're upgrading from a pair of stock earbuds and just want a better-sounding pair of stylish and comfortable headphones for portable use, but if you're looking for something truly good in terms of sound quality, you might want to look elsewhere.

Can't Beat 'Em

Recommend Product: Yes
Pros: Great value
Cons: Not for use during exercise

When I picked these up I had no idea that a replacement for my long-suffering pair of stock earbuds could be such a huge step up! These little things sport some pretty impressive bass and nice sound, especially for under $30.

The only downside came when I tried to take them with me to the treadmill: no matter which eartip I tried, I just couldn't get them to stay in my ears while running. I was pretty disappointed, as I was really looking forward to being able to just zone out and jog (did I mention the noise isolation these provide?), but alas I was foiled and had to make do with a borrowed pair of cheap earbuds.

The eartips are starting to show some signs of wear after about a year, but I don't think that's too abnormal.
