The AKG K3003i in-ear monitors are the most expensive 'universal fit' in-ear headphones available in the industry today. Featuring 3-way drivers with discrete tweeter/woofer arrays, the K 3003i offers serious music lovers a direct competitor to the reference headphone performance offered by custom-made in-ear models without the added hassle or expense of an audiologist visit. The pristine accuracy and deep resolution of the K3003 is akin to the musical presentation delivered by the big AKG K701 headphones: spacious, dynamic and extremely well-extended into the upper mids/highs. Three different earpiece nozzles allow frequency tuning for extra bass or extra highs or for a 'flat' tonal character. Built-in mic + 3-button controller on cord remains compatible with most modern Apple i-devices. Designed and engineered in Austria.
What's In The Box:
The $1,500 AKG Acoustics K3003i in-ear headphones are quite a bold move by the Austrian audio engineering mavericks to compete directly against the custom made (audiologist-fitted) in-ear models currently proliferating at the top of the audiophile market. With a seamless, seemingly indestructible one-piece brushed steel construction and ability to easily tune the sound via screw-on nozzle ports on the earpieces with no tools required, the K3303i surprisingly claims the title of smallest 3-driver in-ear headphones available. The K3003's speaker array employs a unique hybrid of dynamic transducers in tandem with balanced armature drivers, a first in commercially-available in-ear monitors. Thus, the AKG K3003 combines the robust bass response possible with dynamic drivers with the precise definition of balanced armatures for a sound that offers the best of all possible worlds for a broad range of music listeners. We thought the interchangeable nozzles much easier to switch out versus other similar models and the varied acoustic signatures of the K3003 each deliver a distinctly different access into well-produced recordings. The musical presentation hews close to the precise European 'house sound' heard in classic full-size AKG headphones like the K701 when using the 'Reference Sound' nozzles. The 'Treble Boost' nozzles provide a forward, brightly detailed soundscape with a non-boomy bass response that will typically appeal to older audiophiles and classical music fans in particular. Our own HeadRoom favorite is probably the 'Bass Boost' nozzle installations offering significantly improved low-end heft but with still tightly focused extension and audibly fuller low-midrange authority. One of the most impressive traits of the AKG 3003i -- and amongst the hardest things to get right with in-ear headphones-- is the sense of open 'stage space' or spatiality (known as soundstage imaging) that is normally the biggest strength of full-size open-back headphones. However, the K3003 bring a level of air and dimension to the music that's an impressive marvel of in-ear headphone engineering in a 'universal-fit' product.
As alluded, the intense resolution power of the K3303 upper frequencies is best served by uncompressed music files and well-mastered recordings. It is by any estimation a ruthlessly accurate and revealing earphone -- which means lossy MP3 files will sound as shrill and cold as your old van’s AM radio, not a good thing when you've just shelled out nearly $1,500 clams for powerhouse audiophile sound. 8 Ohms impedance allows the K3003i to play loud from any device or source regardless of its power, but the timbral presentation becomes smoother and tames a grainy edge in the uppermost highs when that stiff extra-low impedance is overcome by the voltage reservoir of a good headphone amp. Naturally, we always recommend 'lossless' recordings, uncompressed, or .WAV music files for best defined instrumental / vocal body and expansive soundstage elements. Seven soft silicon eartip sets help achieve the all-important correct fit and in-ear seal within your ear canals. As a puzzling quibble, the 3003 have a non-detachable headphone cord; frankly, a detachable / replaceable cable seems like it should be a standard move with headphones of this high caliber. The 2-year AKG manufacturer's service warranty stays free with your HeadRoom 'authorized dealer' receipt.
