AKG K701 with HeadRoom Balanced Fat Pipe Upgrade
The 701's
AKG has brought their considerable audio engineering skills into sharp focus on their high-end dynamic headphone designs and produced an astonishingly good-sounding pair of cans in the K701 model. Getting it absolutely right at this demanding level of reference-grade audio performance is tough and the K701 gets pretty darn near perfection. These cans deliver a dynamic and punchy sound, articulate and clear over the full audio spectrum. Bass lovers should appreciate the clean punch and tightly focused bottom-end control of these headphones. Classical and acoustic music fans will likewise love the fact that the dynamic control moves right on up the frequency range to distinctly articulate every finger pluck and rosin-on-gut string texture in the sound mix. About the only thing that we can possibly say bad about these headphones is that those who like a very laid-back, mellow or heavy bass presentation might want to look elsewhere since these are certainly highly refined, audiophile-oriented headphones that deliver a smooth impact, textural detail and liquid immediacy that demands your attention. And…oh!...what a lovely demand it is.
Balanced Recabling
How to get it even better? Custom cabling on your AKG K701 will offer even richer detail and a more spacious sound. How do we do it? We start with a custom fabricated, highly upgraded 10-foot cable, specifically designed, trimmed, tinned, and finished for AKG K701 headphones. Then we carefully disassemble your beloved 701s and completely remove the stock cable and connectors. The end result is a completely professional and fully warranteed upgrade that will long serve your balanced listening pleasure.
Of course... you'll need a balanced XLR-output headphone amp and, ideally, an excellent balanced source. We currently offer the Balanced Desktop, HeadRoom Balanced Home Amp and Balanced Max amp. Kill two birds with one stone and get your balanced source too, by purchasing the DAC option. Our DACs allow you to get a truly balanced signal out of any source that offers a digital output. This means that anything offering optical, coax, or USB outputs will serve as an excellent source for balanced drive. That's right folks, this means that your computer can become one of the best balanced sources around.
More About HeadRoom Cabling
Our HeadRoom connector cables are hand-crafted in our Bozeman Montana plant by highly skilled technicians using only the very best materials available. No cheapo, noisy wiring here, babe! The Fat Pipe geometry is a four-conductor with braided shield cable featuring Golden Ratio, oxygen-free, pure copper Litz wire with pure teflon dialectrics just like the big boys. The connectors are terminated by hand using Cardas Ultra Pure Quadeutectic solder. The connectors are mechanically inert, isolated from electrical noise and completely resonance-free, producing a very quiet, musical and superbly accurate cable capable of beautiful sound reproduction.
Dont forget about our own HeadRoom-designed & engineered XLR-to-1/4" Dongle Adapter suitable for using your killer XLR-terminated balanced headphones with any standard single-ended 1/4" headphone amp/source connection.
*The additional $100 costs as seen below on this headphone are comprised of our in-house HeadRoom labor charges for disassembling the AKG k-701 hard-wired headphones, replacing with the new Cardas Audio Fat-Pipe cord, (in the process removing some internal earcup wiring contact points), and restoring the 'phones to brand-new condition; it's a professionally finished & fully warranteed cable upgrade done by our best HR techs.
