Most sealed-earcup headphones err on the side of being too warm; the Ultrasone HFI-700 is a clear and welcome change. These cans are very articulate, well-balanced and truly crystal-clear sounding given their closed-earcup design. The bass is quite good, punchy and not over-emphasized, though maybe just slightly resonant in the mid-bass as is typical for most sealed 'phones. The mid-range sonics are nicely defined, clear and without overly blatant coloration -- again, not so easy a feat in sealed cans. The highs are fairly transparent with superb resolution and clean, well-rendered detail. Though perhaps lacking the ultra-liquid, smoothly organic transitions between the various frequency ranges of ultra high-end reference headphones, these cans remain pretty impressive over-all audio performers and are certainly among the best within the full-sized 'sealed/closed' headphone category.

These full-sized sealed-earcup cans are made with a unique Ultrasone all-plastic polymer construction that allows the earcups to either swivel flat for storage in a narrow space (like in your briefcase or backpack), or fold up into the headband to make a smallish, tidy lump. The earpads are cushioned with plush foam pads covered with a nice quality pleather. The single-sided headphone cord exits from the left earpiece and is terminated 10 feet later with a stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-plug; also included in the package is a handy screw-on 1/8"-to-1/4" inch plug adapter.
