Superlux HD668B are designed for professional level and near-audiophile quality performance at a fraction of the cost of most top-tier monitoring headphones. The sound is indeed exceptional with a clear timbral perspective that beats many more expensive cans. The great clarity means excellent musical definition with a smoothly accurate presentation that's extra-surprising given the HD668B's nice price. Highly recommended for music lovers who don't want to spend a ton to get great sound.
What We Think:
The Superlux HD 668B headphones are 'monitoring/studio' cans that completely belie their killer low price given the amazing high performance sound coming out of these things. Offering a slightly beefier build and materials versus the extra budget-friendly Superlux HD661, the HD668B offers similar sonic strengths as its cheaper brethren but with a stiffer impedance rating making these ideally suited for dedicated headphone amplification. The tone of the 668 B is almost shockingly clean and robustly detailed for such a well-priced 'semi-sealed' monitoring headphone; in fact, we think it may represent one of the best values currently found in headphone-land and gives a good run for the sonic money against some cans at 2X the price. The HD668B highs are perhaps a bit etched in the upper treble ranges, but the overall presentation retains a musical warmth that renders these easy-to-enjoy headphones. The Superlux cosmetics are obviously derived from the classic AKG K240 look, but listeners can expect a bit more low-end content from the HD668B when compared to the typical K240 sound -- at a significantly cheaper price! At a rated 98dB sensitivity, computer or portable listeners will benefit from a headphone amp for improved resolution and instrumental definition. The Superlux HD668B ergonomics are full-size / circumaural so the leather-type earpads will typically completely encircle the earlobes on most wearers. The earcup construction is 'semi-sealed' so expect only mild attenuation of ambient noise, but decent protection against leakage from the headphones during close-mic recording work. Ergonomically, the auto-fit 'wing' design of the HD668B reminds of the headband employed by full-size Audio-Technica headphones and it delivers a comfortable fit, especially on bigger-sized heads. The quick-detachable cable is a huge plus to ensure maximum cord / headphone durability and the Superlux package nicely includes two cord choices in 1 meter and 3 meter lengths. The single-sided headphone cable exits from the left earcup only, so no messy 'Y'-cord tangling. Both cords are high-quality OFC-grade 'straight-type' cables terminated to 3.5mm 'mini' plug jacks. A full-size 1/4' stereo plug adapter is handily provided in the Superlux box.
