Read about the best headphones on the planet here.
There’s really no such thing as “The World’s Best Headphones.” For starters, the best headphones for travel are not the best for your listening room. Headphone utility is highly application specific, so no one headphone will be best for all uses. And second, everyone has different ears and tastes, so even within one application there may be more than one headphone at the top of the heap. Nonetheless, there are clearly some world-class headphones out there, and we thought it would be fun to give them a rundown.

I am curious why it is generally accepted that an open set of cans will sound better than a closed set? I think the Denons are absolutely fantstic. The D7000 is a moving experience.

Hi Marc (I assume),
With closed cans the designers have to deal with a sealed enclosure behind the driver, which is likely to create resonances etc. With open cans, the rear of the driver sees that nice big open space that isn’t reflecting any energy. For a long time there was a big difference between sealed and open cans for that reason.
However, as you rightly point out, sealed cans these days are getting very, very good, and the Denon cans in particular are absolutely terrific.
Thanks for asking.

Hi TTYL,
Im a bit confused. Which headphone would you pick from the HD800, T1 and the GS1000i? My setup is as follows – Woo Audio 6 valve amp, Source Sony ES CD changer + Bel Canto DAC 2. I have heard the HD800 but thought them to be too boring. Then again I have not heard the GS1000i or the Beyerdynamic T1 and hence am turning to you for a suggesstion. I own the Grade SR60 and 80 and find them just ok – i.e. I cant listen to them for very long before getting tired of them. I have the HD650 but find them too rolled off and muffled compared to what I heard on the HD800. Please help. Shahzad
