Sennheiser PX 100-II
In an act of refinement, Sennheiser has revised a classic extremely good headphone to produce a great one with fuller bass response. The cool folding features and portable sizing remain, but the PX100-II adds deeper sound and one of the most sonically pleasing tones in the category, along with a single-sided cable that prevents cord tangling when folded. The beefier headband design definitely improves durability and the small 'on-ear' open-back earpieces allow you to remain aware of activity near you when out and about on busy city streets.
Product Features:
- Vented open-back 'on-ear' earpieces allow listeners to remain aware of environs
- Unique 'Fold & Flip' construction collapses for on-the-go transit
- Proprietary Sennheiser 'Duo-Fol' driver engineering pumps deep bass, crisp vocals impressive for size
- Free Sennheiser 2-year manufacturer's premium product warranty
What's In The Box:
- Soft-Sided Travel/Storage Case
Applications:
The sound of the revised Sennheiser PX100-II is attractive and, for the size, we think it amongst the top headphones in its category at this pricepoint, delivering punchy bass sans over-accentuation, decently balanced mid-ranges, and an extended treble without edge or tonal brashness. It's hard not to like a tiny portable headphone that does so much so well, and we think you'll enjoy it direct from your iPod, MP3 device, laptop computer or iPad with no headphone amp needed. This Sennheiser PX100-II model now boasts a nicely beefed-up headband assembly constructed for better durability to withstand daily wear and tear. Other key "II" improvements include thicker, sturdier earpiece frame supports and a new single-sided cable design (no messy 'Y-cord' rats nest!) that stays tangle-free in a supplied pouch. The open-back earpieces allow you to remain aware of surroundings, important if jamming large on busy streets. The new steel-reinforced headband design can be easily folded into a supplied travel pouch that's about the size of a sunglasses case, making the PX100-II the ultimate compact, multi-purpose portable headphone solution for discerning ears. Please allow minimum of 100hrs of play-time for these sweet little cans to 'burn-in' and sound their very best.
The Sennheiser PX100-II portable headphones come in a nifty all-black matte color encasing a very lightweight aluminum-reinforced headband. The headphone cord extends approximately 4ft, the perfect length for mobile and portable listening without cable jams, and it terminates to a 3.5mm (1/8") 'mini' plug jack. A Sennheiser soft-sided carrying / storage pouch is handily provided in the package into which the PX100 II will easily fold for transit. The free 2 year manufacturer's product warranty covers most any eventualities with this high-quality, well-engineered headphone as long as your vendor receipt shows original purchase via verified 'Sennheiser-authorized' dealer, like HeadRoom ~ Headphone.com since 1992!

Pros: great build, one sided cable
Cons: instrument separation, clarity
tried everything to like these - burn in, stretch the headband, mod quarter-sized holes in the earpad, equalize the hell out of it - all to no avail. I have two players - an ipod nano 5th gen and a clip+ - and on both of these the px 100 iis lose miserably to the original px100 in everything but the bass.
most noticeable is the instrument separation - the IIs are congested - like all the sound is emanating from the middle of the driver, while the originals pxs have better imaging/placement, resulting in better clarity.
i know the original px 100s were characterized as dark, but the px100 iis outdo them in this regard due to the bloated bass.
sennheiser, why mess with the formula?? we aren't looking for dre beats!!

Pros: Comfortable, Durable, Good Sound, Great value for the money
Great sound for inexpensive headphones, though some of the newer models may have surpassed them (8 years is a long time). They still blow away the head phones that come with iPods and MP3 players.

Pros: Better build quality, still a good deal.
Cons: Less hi-freq detail compared to Gen 1
The Gen 2 is not in the same category: that of a real bargain I cant wait to share with everybody else.
The build quality of Gen 2 seems better, more solid and barely heavier. I really like the single cord. But despite the better bass, there is clearly a sense of muddiness to the treble in direct comparison to the Gen 1. I had to pull off the foam cushions to be sure there was no extra plastic wrapping they forgot to remove, it was that noticeable. Having said that, it is still a pretty good small headphone. And a few adjustments of the equalizer make up for it . In fact it sounds a lot better when used with a headphone amp. It could be it just isn't being driven adequately by an iPod. Honestly sometimes I feel the PX gen 1 sounds better than the HD 650 when both are fed by an iPod.
But I have to say, the Gen 1 sounds amazingly good paired with a iPod nano Gen 5 (which is the really small square new one) compared to Gen 2.
People cant believe it when I have them listen. Good thing I have one Gen 1 in good shape left as a spare...
UPDATE for anyone who cares: I add this because I have broken in the Gen 2 for over 100 hours and I can honestly say I like them but they are just completely different in character than the Gen 1. The Gen 1 has more spatial detail and simply a better headphone. A true classic, 5 stars. I have done A-B comps with Gen 1 and 2, and the 2's have better bass but you lose all sense of echo and being in a large space. The Gen 1 portrays all this clearly.
