When we first heard the Spider Real Voice in-ears, we immediately fell in love with the sound and guessed them to be in the neighborhood of $100. Discovering they were only $79 bucks, our love turned into affordable audio lust and we had to see what else our newly beloved Spider Audio had to offer. Turns out we found the Spider E500 Pocket Speaker lurking in their back forty; it’s been nothing but PDA (Public Displays of Audio) since. The Spider E500 Pocket Speaker is rechargeable via internal lithium-ion batteries, accepts a full charge via mini-USB in about 2 hours and will play for 8+ hours at minimum; our own HeadRoom experiences indicate the E500 will play on the plus side of 10 hours. On a single charge, it kept our soundtrack playing all weekend on a recent camping trip into the Montana mountains and also had our Denver RMAF 2011 HeadRoom crew party rocking for almost three nights in a row. Of course, don't expect to thump your tunes for a funky dance-off with this single little speaker, but you can expect good clarity and plenty of volume for dorm and hotel room, tent camping, picnicking and even desktop listening. As our fun-loving HeadRoom RMAF crew discovered, the Pocket Speaker is loud enough to get late-night volume complaints at a nice hotel... Sorry about that, we're from Montana and jes' enjoying dis' here big city for a spell (!).
For listening situations requiring extra thumpitude power, you can daisy-chain two or more Spider E500 Pocket Speakers together via the E500 'buddy-plug' to hear the volume and overall depth of sound fill out nicely. HeadRoom Tip #773: Set your E500 speaker atop a plastic tote or an empty cardboard box with a hole ("port") cut-out on one side to hear the bass extend further and start to power some of your sickest hotel room dance moves. The E500 can sound a bit thin in overall low-end response without "The HeadRoom Bass Box" -- after all, its stated frequency response is only 180Hz to 16kHz -- but the clarity and natural tone of the mid-ranges and upper frequencies are exactly what we expected to hear after our initial fling with the Spider Real Voice in-ears. No question, the Spider E500 Pocket Speaker makes a great, inexpensive upgrade to the completely bass-less, horribly distorted sound that comes from built-in laptop, MP3 player or iPhone speakers. It's a cool way to share tunes anywhere from any portable source you currently own. Spider strikes again!
