AKG Acoustics in Austria has brought their superlative audio engineering skills into sharp focus on their high-end dynamic headphone designs and they undoubtedly produced a superb pair of cans with their K702 model. The only differences between the sibling K701 and K702 AKG headphones is the color scheme and the K-702's handy detachable cord, which makes it a breeze to upgrade or replace if needed.
As headphone lovers know, getting it absolutely right at this demanding level of reference audio performance - at this price - ain't easy. We think the AKG K702 gets it pretty darn near perfection.
These headphones deliver a truly dynamic and texturally punchy sound, articulate and clear over the entire audio spectrum. Precise musical detail connoisseurs should appreciate the clean extension and tightly focused bass control. Classical and acoustic music aficionados will love the fact that the dynamic control moves right on up the frequency range to distinctly articulate every finger pluck and rosin-on-gut string texture in the mix.
The AKG K702 soundstage image is deeply expansive and simply layered. The only untoward thing we can possibly say about these headphones is that music lovers seeking a very laid-back, mellow or big bass presentation may need to look elsewhere. The K-702 tone is highly refined with an analytical incisiveness and a liquid immediacy that will demand your full attention. And what a lovely musical demand it is!
As we mentioned above, the major difference between the K701/White and K702/Black (other than color) is the K-702 has a detachable headphone cable while the K-701 cord is a non-detachable 'hard-wired' type. We love the K702's deep blue-black color scheme, which is subtly understated. We also think most listeners will enjoy how amazingly comfortable these big headphones feel on the head with their lightweight, albeit slightly oversize fit style.
Along with the K701, the AKG K702 contains a number of unique design features delivering significant audio advancements over previous AKG headphones. The dynamic range extension and pristine clarity of detail texture is improved by a proprietary 'VariMotion' diaphragm that provides smoother pistonic driver motion with very strong resonance rejection. More importantly, AKG's revolutionary flat-wound voice coil allows for super-intense concentrations of the magnetic field within the transducer, thus driving the element diaphragm with better authority and a clean, ultra-articulate presentation.
The ergonomically shaped earcup cushions are made of a soft velour fabric (very comfortable) and are designed to correctly angle the drivers precisely at the ear for a more spatially correct listening experience. The K702 detachable cord links to the headphones using secure 3-pin mini-XLR connectors. The ease of cable replacement significantly extends the long use-life of the headphones. The 10ft AKG K-702 headphone cord terminates to a mini 1/8' [3.5mm] stereo jack with a screw-type 1/4" [6.3mm] plug adapter provided.
Our own Headphone.com experience with the AKG K702 echoes the common notion that it needs a good chunk of burn-in time to sonically 'open up' and perform its best, so assume a few hundred hours of play-time before the full musical pleasure of the K702 is completely realized.
Headphone Amps and AKG K702: For listeners using the AKG K702 with smartphones or tablets, a headphone amp is recommended for maximized audio performance due to the K-702 low sensitivity (despite its fairly efficient 62 Ohm impedance). Be sure to check out our selection of headphone amps to pair with the K702.
