When we first got the AKG K712 in for review at Headphone.com, we noted the outer box said "improved bass response by 3dB." "Gee, well that's nice," we found our ourselves muttering aloud. "So is this some marketing jargon or the real deal?"
It only took us a moment to realize AKG was not kidding. The AKG K-712 is reminiscent of the classic K701 spacious and airy sound, but instead of a slightly uncommanding low bass, the 712's kick actually gets you moving a little bit. Its by no means a basshead's dream headphone, but it seems everyone can appreciate a dose of well-controlled thump, especially when tightly rendered with all the texture of a black rose petal intact.
AKG has done a beautiful job getting the bass extension and presence to an appropriately defined level while maintaining superb clarity throughout the rest of the frequency range. If you prefer a tightly accurate sound, but get bored with so-called 'analytical' headphones, we suggest putting some butter on your toast and flavoring it up with the K712.
Another welcome update on the K712 is the improved ergonomic fit. AKG did away with the odd lumps on the underside of the headband that used to cause consternation for some wearers on the older models. The new memory-foam material in the earcup cushions settles in quickly and softly around the earlobes.
Included in the box is a carrying bag and two removable headphone cables, one coiled style and one straight style. The headphone cords employ the same 3-pin connector type found on the AKG K702 and other top AKG models. AKG maintains a free 2-year manufacturer's warranty when proof-purchased from authorized AKG headphone dealers - like us here at Headphone.com since 1995!
