The Audeze Deckard Amp / DAC was expressly engineered by the premium California headphone company for its own line of high-end planar magnetic headphones. But rest assured the Deckard works just as well with any brand of dynamic or planar headphones on the market. It also dovetails sweetly with the newest Audeze iSine planar magnetic in-ear headphones.
A 3-way gain control on the front panel switches between Low/ Medium / High output which allows for maximum headroom and an audibly lower noise floor depending on the impedance rating and sensitivity demands of the headphones in use. Of course, low gain is best reserved for in-ears and highly efficient earphones while the mid and high gain settings are optimized for various types of over-ear headphones.
Another useful feature of the Deckard is the volume-controlled RCA pre-amp line outputs enabling a complete desktop solution to connect your powered speakers or another outboard amplifier component directly via the Deckard.
The Audeze Deckard headphone amp / DAC is obviously a perfect match for the Audeze 'LCD' series of planar magnetic headphones up to the LCD-3. However, for upscale Audeze LCD-4 owners, you may find your superb but incredibly power-hungry LCD-4 reference cans hankering for even a bit more juice at times.
In our Headphone.com review tests, the Audeze Deckard headphone amp / DAC unit synergized wonderfully with virtually any headphone (other than the LCD-4!) that benefitted from a Class-A boost in drive power, dynamic speed and improved detail resolution. The Deckard's DAC digital USB connection sounds decently smooth and jitter-free with a pleasantly warm coloration sans gritty tonal edges. Given its reasonable price, we think the Deckard represents an outstanding audio investment for any headphone lover.
