The proprietary iSine Fluxor magnet arrays that Audeze engineers miniaturized down from their full-size headphones impressively deliver the same intense level of resolution and light / dark dynamic shadings as their big audiophile cans. It's a truly huge and powerful sound heavy on detail and texture that totally belies the fact its coming out of a small in-ear earpiece.
The iSine 20 model offers slightly better imaging and low-end texture compared to the less expensive iSine 10 edition - but the overall acoustic differences are not at all 'night & day'. Audiophiles can expect a bit more musical refinement and clear transparency from the iSine20 with slightly quicker dynamic movement into the top end.
We also heard the iSine 20 as having a tad more instrumental body heft and focus in the critical midrange frequencies that allowed voices to sound chesty and full-throated without evident grain or stress. It's a well-paced, non-fatiguing musical presentation that is designed to be enjoyed for hours on end.
Certainly the biggest design difference between these and most other in-ear headphone is that the Audeze i-Sine feature an open-back earpiece construction. That means ambient noise isolation or environmental noise-blocking is not part of the equation with these.
In fact, you'll be able to hear loud conversations and external noises leak into the iSine headphones in loud environments, meaning these headphones may not be the best choice for airline travel or commuting. However, the unique open design might be considered a good thing for those listeners who want to remain at least somewhat aware of their surroundings while jamming out.
The most remarkable result of the open earpiece design is the amazing airy spaciousness of the sound which has some of the most deeply expansive '3-D' imaging we've experienced with in-ear headphones. No doubt, it's about the closest we've heard in-ears come to delivering a layered, atmospheric soundstage like big open-back cans.
The included iSine 20 Apple Lightning plug cable is ready for your iPhone 7 or new Apple iOS device. The cable features the Audeze Cipher 24-bit DAC / headphone amp built into the cord which gives the iSine headphones excellent tone-shaping flexibility along with some glossy DSP audio shine.
At just 20 grams, the rather large iSine earpieces feel very light in the ears and the unique Audeze eartip fit and earhook loops keep the earphones secure and stable.
