The Sennheiser materials lab in Wedemark Germany is among the most brilliant in the headphone business and renown for superb audio engineering and cutting-edge headphone development. The Sennheiser HD1 showcases their best sound quality in the extremely popular 'smartphone-ready' headphone category. In our Headphone.com review opinion, the HD 1 is a truly excellent-sounding, stylish over-ear portable headphone capable of doing many things very well.
For listeners using an iPhone/iPad or Android devices, the sealed earcup HD1 includes a detachable (replaceable) headphone cable containing a built-in mic + 3-button player control. Solid environmental ambient noise isolation allows use at the office cubicle or during travel without audio 'leaking' out of the cans earning you dirty looks from passersby. As another plus, the mic control housing is sturdily built and avoids the chintzy feel of other headset 3-button controls. It's also efficient enough (18 Ohms) to be used from a wide variety of sources like PCs, laptops and tablets without needing a headphone amp.
The lightweight but well-built steel headband of the Sennheiser HD 1 folds up and is durably designed for the long haul. The upscale Pittards UK-tanned leather earpad cushions feel soft on the ears and not overly hot thanks to the fine pad breathability that's also moisture-resistant due to the painstaking high-end Pittards tanning process. An included storage valise neatly fits these headphones for travel & transit.
The Sennheiser HD1 tone sticks close to the classic 'warm and smooth' signature sound heard in lauded Sennheiser reference models like the HD600 or HD650 with a solid low-end extension that doesn't get in the way of clear midranges and upper highs. Safe to say, bass lovers won't feel skimped on the lows but even analytical listeners will not miss vocal detail or upper treble 'air' and an open sense of musical space. The uppermost strata of soprano highs does sound somewhat rolled-off and exhibits a trace of the infamous Sennheiser 'veil'.
However, we did not find the rounded treble shimmer a deal-breaker given the price and category of this headphone. In fact, in the field of 'smartphone-oriented' headphones, our review opinion is the HD 1 may be the top choice for mobile listeners seeking a high-performance, full-featured portable headphone/headset ready for travel and on-the-fly jams.
As our biggest quibble, the microphone on the cord seemed somewhat prone to picking up ambient environmental noise, so phone calls are best performed in quieter spaces whenever possible. The cable connection type into the HD 1 headphone itself is a tiny 2.5mm [ not 3.5mm] jack employing a 3-ring plug tip design.
